This should provide a more consistently great looking picture than PEII.

Lovely. This is worth a pre-order.

Finally finished PE2 last night and it was great. Hoping for another Human Planet because--surprisingly--I liked the Cities episode the best. Some unbelievably gorgeous shots in that episode.

Not necessarily, especially if the footage was captured at the same time as PE II.

BBC basically had a mission a while back to shoot footage with better cameras and techniques (drones, cable cams, cranes, bird cams etc.) and got a funding grant to do so by way of various production partnerships. Then they carved up the footage among a variety of UHD TV programs.

However, the crew didn't have a mandate that all the footage had to be captured at 4k, just a certain percentage.

I know this is listed as a 4 disc UHD & Blu-Ray set, but I find it strange that the packaging does not have the "4K Ultra HD + Blu-Ray" banner across the top like the UK set does. Plus, this is just a 4 disc set, while the UK set is a 6 disc set.

I would expect this to follow the PEII set, which in the US was just the UHD discs. But that leads to some confusion. The UK set is 3 UHD discs & 3 Blu-Ray Discs. This US set is 4 Discs. I get that the 3 UHD Discs would be the same as the UK set, but what's the extra 4th UHD disc? A bonus disc? Or will it be 3 UHD discs, and 1 Blu-Ray Bonus Disc?

How is this show? I heard that the 1st season was boring and used repeat stuff from other shows.

There's a reason Planet Earth II in "mostly" 4k didn't focus on the oceans, lakes, rivers, etc. They saved the newer video footage of those sections for this and other programs. You have to buy PE II and BP II for a more complete series.

The first Planet Earth show touched upon water animals and plants and used some footage from the original Blue Planet as well, which was shot in SD... hence the crossover.

The Part II's in this BBC Nature series are more about the cinematography, the originals had meatier and more substantive narration. Though, these newer shows do delve a little bit into human behavior causing havoc on the natural world.

I'd guess that it'll follow the PEII scheme, where the US release will have 3 UHD discs containing the show, and then the last disc will be a Blu-ray with the "making of" featurettes for each episode. The UK edition, however, would be the same 3 UHD discs of the show and 3 Blu-rays containing the entire show in HD plus the "making of" featurettes.

Since the US release only has special features on the Blu-ray, it wouldn't advertise the Blu-ray on the packaging banner, because that's describing what format the actual program in on. Since the UK version has the entire show on UHD and Blu-ray, they feature both those formats on the banner.

I want to future proof with getting 4K but I need the bluray too. I have a Sony bluray player so It doesn't sound like the UK set would work for me. Guess I will just get the regular bluray and will miss the 4K version.

If it has anything half as good as iguanas vs. snakes from PE II you'll be eating your words about "battles to the death"

4K.com is reporting it will feature HDR10 and HLG. I think that's a first for HLG on disc, right?

Recently ordered the UK Blu-ray (waiting for it to arrive) since I can play the 25fps and I'm guessing this is going to be another framerate conversion for UHD as Planet Earth II was.

HLG is something I know very little about. From what I understand it's something most of us won't even have to worry about. Am I wrong?

HLG will most likely be what Broadcasters use for HDR (TV). It’s not something you have to “worry” about yet, but there are a good handful or more of TVs that support it now.

You're not wrong - it's a version of HDR that is embedded in the signal vs. being separate metadata. It was developed by BBC and their Japanese counterpart NHK and is primarily for broadcast use where footage is encoded in real-time. SDR TVs simply throw away or don't see the extra signal and compatible TVs (a long list already) interpret it similar to HDR10. It's not meant to compete with the other formats - they are simply too complex for most broadcast environments.

DirecTV just had their first 4K HDR broadcast last night (Penguins/Knights game) and it was HLG HDR.
