Default How long before Blu-ray takes the throne!

I'am saying 5 years before Blu Ray fully dethrones DVD? Any ideas on when you think DVD's become obsolete?

For me they already are I have no DVDs at all anymore i use to have about 2000. I just can't watch a DVD anymore I'am hooked on blu!

I think it's definitely going to be a gradual thing where DVD sales keep going down and BD sales keep going up over the course of 4 years or so.

Funny I thought it has LOL Ok on a serious note. No about 10 and that might be pushing it. That is if the economy changes. Granted the economy has pushed Blu-ray to where it is now in my opinion. Then agianwho really does no. It would be awesome if it were next year.

I give it....another 3 years or so....but I don't have any numbers to use as reference so it's really a guess on my part.

Personally, I don't want to see B-rays go mainstream, I like feeling special

You will see great growth for Blu-ray in 2009, and considerable regression on DVD sales. Just keep your eyes on the shelf space dedicated to each format. Blu-ray will expand and DVD will retract.

I'm going to say around 3 years as well, however I DO want Blu-ray to go mainstream so the studios will finally lower the prices, especially on new releases.

It has been said before - top 5 things for blu to take it in 5 years

#1 Player prices - $99 (getting close to that - but need quality)
#2 PS3 to $249 or less
#3 MSRP to $19.99 on new titles
#4 advertising - didn't see a lot of blu commercials this holiday - more than last year, but still
#5 information - I had to explain to my mother and others this weekend AGAIN that blu players will still play their DVD's...

Are you asking when Blu-ray passes dvd in sales? That would be approximately 24 to 36 months from now.

I am not that optimistic, first there is this economic crisis, second for DVD's nobody needed to upgrade their TV or sound system which they have to do (on top of getting the new player) if they want to enjoy the difference with BD.
So I'll say something like 3 to 5 years before equal sales of each system.

Last night an old friend made fun of me for converting my library to blu-ray. He said there is no difference.

It's sad, but a lot of people that have not watched blu-ray on an HDTV with a good surround sound system will not convert.

I think the movie prices are the main reason it is not taking over as fast as I would like to see. The new releases come out and are allmost double the DVD price. I usually wait for a good deal on amazon before I bite. Unless it's a must have title like TDK (I didn't see it in theaters). i even waited on Iron Man. Keep in mind, I was impressed with both

I would also say about 5 years. Many people including my parents think there isnt much difference and blus are more then twice as much as dvd's these days. Dvd's will be around for a long time after that. Vhs tapes were around till last week werent they?

You know I was thinking after reading all our statments and thoughts. After seriously thinking about it. I really think that not just Blu beating DVD sales, or even Blu being Mainstream (which I think if we all realy think about it is closer then we al think) I think the transition to BLu and away from DVD, might seriously be quicker then we all think. I mean I've seen alot and heard a lot of people saying in my home town they rather have Blu anyday over DVD anymore. I can also proudly say I have converted a friend of my in-laws over to blu.

He had watched polar express the day before x-mas. He came over and asked me what exactly is the deal with Blu. To make a long story short we popped in the blu version. within 30 senconds of seein it. His jaw just dropped. He said he had no idea that Blu was like that. He said the textures and detail were just amazing. of course I had a huge smile on my face. H said on the DVD all you see is the boys face lying there. On the blu he was blown away that he actually saw frickels, and a red blushing affect on his cheeks. He said that it really looked like a real boy just about.

People definitely are NOT being informed. I've noticed that most people I talk to about BR don't even know that they would still be able to play their SD DVD's on a BR player.
