Criterion The Age of Innocence (1993)

Quote:
No filmmaker captures the grandeur and energy of New York like Martin Scorsese. With this sumptuous romance, he meticulously adapted the work of another great New York artist, Edith Wharton, bringing to life her tragic novel of the cloistered world of Gilded Age Manhattan. The Age of Innocence tells the story of Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), whose engagement to an innocent socialite (Winona Ryder) binds him to the codes and rituals of his upbringing. But when her cousin (Michelle Pfeiffer) arrives in town on a wave of scandal after separating from her husband, she ignites passions in Newland he never knew existed. Swelling with exquisite period detail, this film is an alternately heartbreaking and satirical look at the brutality of old-world America.
Quote:
DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION:
  • New, restored 4K digital transfer, approved by director Martin Scorsese, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New interviews with Scorsese, coscreenwriter Jay Cocks, production designer Dante Ferretti, and costume designer Gabriella Pescucci
  • Innocence and Experience, a 1993 documentary on the making of the film
  • Trailer
  • PLUS: An essay by critic Geoffrey O’Brien

Phenomenal announcement.

Pretty boring cover though... and I wish they could've gotten interviews with Pfeiffer and/or Ryder.

Should look similar to the Italian Sony release.

I've been adding movies to my Scorsese collection lately and I was considering importing this and Kundun. Now Kino is releasing Kundun and this is being given to us courtesy of Criterion!
Now if those Scorsese movies not currently on Blu-ray could get put on Blu-ray

Good, one step closer to bringing all of Scorsese's past movies out on blu-ray.

Hasn't "After Hours" been a strong rumor for Criterion for a few years now?

I would also love to see "Bringing Out the Dead" get a Blu-ray release.

The German import of "Kundun" has the feature-length making of, which I'm pretty sure Kino doesn't have, so I don't regret getting it even though I will double dip (unless Kino uses the same transfer, which would be very unfortunate).

I held off on "Age of Innocence" because people seemed so convinced that Criterion was gonna get it, and I'm glad I did.

At this point, I think most of the remaining unreleased Scorsese movies are with Warners, except for "Bringing Out the Dead" (unfortunately, that's Paramount, so it seems likely to be the last one). "Knocking" and "Alice" were supposed to come out in January in the UK, but the releases were cancelled because the HD masters weren't available.

I have a feeling that Criterion is working on a release of After Hours, because Warner Archive would’ve released it already. Same thing with Lost in America- it was a long-rumored WB title and it finally got a Criterion release. However, if Mean Streets is on their queue of future releases, I hope it doesn’t get placed before After Hours.

I love pretty much all of Scorsese's films (with a couple of exceptions: New York, New York, Gangs of New York and The Color of Money), and I have the German BD release of Age of Innocence, but I caution anyone who thinks this is a sure-fire blind buy. The movie is beautifully shot and wonderfully acted, but for a whole lot of people it would be probably be the cure for insomnia: it is (purposely) about as SLOW moving a movie as I've ever seen. Jay Cocks, the screenwriter (also worked w/Scorsese on Gangs of New York and Silence) is far from my favorite collaborator with Marty, and his name on the credits only makes me pine for the days when Paul Schrader and Nick Pileggi worked with Scorsese and helped create some of his finest works.

It's going to be hard to beat the Sony release.

Anyone know if "Bringing Out the Dead" is licensed to be released by anyone? Such a shame it hasn't had a Blu-ray release. The fact that EVERY Scorsese movie isn't on Blu-ray is mind-boggling.

This is from a new 4K restoration with extras, Sony's international release is from an older HD master and no extras.

I don't find it slower than other period drama masterpieces, eg. James Ivory films.
Do you know of any fast paced romantic period drama?

I'm almost sure they mean "new to USA".
The international release is already from a 4K scan.

I hope the encoding isn't worse!
Which reminds me: I wonder who releases this in UK (Eureka maybe? or Criterion again?). Maybe I should wait for that one.

By the way, I agree about the boring cover.
i LOVE the original poster or something like this:

or even something like handpainted/drawn, like the cover of Howards End.

but anyway, it's better than the hideously photoshopped international bluray cover.

There aren't many directors whose catalog extends back to the 1970s who are fully represented on Blu-ray yet. All I can think of are Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg (excluding some TV movies), plus George Lucas (but he has so few films). But Scorsese is probably one of the few who will get there (again, excluding some feature-length stuff he shot for TV).

Slow? When did you last see it? It's the quickest paced movie of its kind I know of. And emotionally brutal. In no way a cure for insomnia.

It's slower than "Goodfellas", but I don't think it's much slower than "Taxi Driver".
