Default Yamaha PEQ vs GEQ equalizer settings and sub settings

So I just re-calibrated my 5.2 setup with my Yamaha RX-V481 receiver. First of all YPAO put measurements are all over the place (such as distance and levels) so I had to re-adjust those. It set my crossover at 100Hz instead of 80Hz and always sets my front L/R to "large". I also always get a "W:3 Level Error" and the subwoofer indicator on the display flashes. Plus it set my sub level to the lowest possible level of -10. The volume level on the rear of the subs is half (I'm using dual subs with a Y-splitter). In any event after tweaking the settings the surround overall sounds great and dialog is easy to understand. But the sub levels I think need to be tweaked. But I notice when going into the equalizer settings that when on PEQ (which is the results of YPAO) it sound more surround-like even for just stereo music whereas the GEQ or OFF settings (both sound the same) are more flat. It doesn't sound bad just not as full. Has anyone here turned off the EQ on their Yamaha receiver or played with the GEQ settings? I noticed you can tweak it for each speaker and not just an overall adjustment. That seems like it would take a lot of time but has anyone done that? Also should I keep the volume knob on the rear of the subs at half and simply adjust the level in the receiver settings?

Default Yamaha PEQ vs GEQ equalizer settings and sub settings

Some suggestions from a veteran Yamaha owner with a 775:

1. Don’t mess with the distance settings that YPAO gives you. That’s Yamaha-speak for delays to keep everything in sync from the position the mic was in.

2. If it set the sub to -10, your sub is likely dialed up to high. Set it at 1/3 or 1/4 and rerun YPAO. Keep doing it until YPAO sets the sub level at -2 — +2. Then you can adjust with the AVR as desired depending upon content.

3. Setting speakers to small enables bass management, then set the crossover to where you think it’s best. I have floor standing speakers teh 6.5” woofers, fairly good bass capability but uneven < 90 Hz, so I have my cross over set to 110 Hz, and a Hsu VTF-2 sub handling the very low bass. There’s a theory that if you remove the power requirement for producing low bass from even tower speakers, they are more efficient at producing upper bass. Also helps the AVR if the sub is self-powered (active).

4. PEQ adjusts the sound to adapt to your listening environment, not the speakers per se. I have adjusted the PEQ settings extensively to match Bose 401 mains with a Yamaha center speaker and old Bose 301 surrounds. It can be fun, but ultimately an enthusiast’s hobby. I say, go with what sounds good to you.

1. Someone else on another forum was saying the same thing. Seems Yamaha needs to re-name that section of their settings.

2. I set the volume knob on the rear of the sub to half when I calibrated. That's what the manual said I should do. Guess I'll try that one again. Maybe I won't get the "error message" again.

3. I have the crossover set at 80Hz as that seems to be the one most people suggest. Is the crossover something I should set before running YPAO?

4. I don't really have the patience to set the EQ manually for each speaker. So it would be best to just use the PEQ that YPAO comes up with?

Crossover at 80 Hz is hte DD reference standard, but it’s not a one size fits all. It depends upon the woofer size of your mains. Go measure them and tell us.

What’s “best?” is what is pleasing to your ears. If you really don’t know, I’d use the “Flat” or “Front” PEQ settings.

This is my speaker set. http://www.fluance.com/avhtb-surroun...speaker-system Plus I have dual Paradigm PDR10 subwoofers.

I haven't noticed any front or flat PEQ settings. I can't tweak PEQ only GEQ.
