I've never seen this movie but I'm a big fan of Rankin/Bass and have seen most of their other movies and TV specials, so I'll be picking this up for sure.

Is this comparable to The Last Unicorn? Better? Worse? I personally really like Last Unicorn and was just curious on people's thoughts on this film.

It is comparable to the rankin/bass hobbit stuff and the Last Unicorn. I personally like this the best of the bunch. Pretty great voice cast ( John Ritter, James Earl Jones, Harry Morgan, etc). Explores the themes of science and magic, even explains how dragons are able to fly. If you're a fan of fantasy stuff like LOTR and the other above mentioned animated stuff, you should like this.

Wow, what a nice surprise. Wonderful piece of animated history from a time of film making that seems all but forgotten. I wouldn't be surprised if the recent Pete's Dragon borrowed some influence from this film.

Dude, it has dragons. Way better than the Last Unicorn.

This was animated, as was Last Unicorn, by a lot of the people who went on to become Studio Ghibli, so if you're a fan...

I love this to bits. As a kid, I was genuinely scared by a couple of bits, not least the ogre of Gormley Keep.

The original aspect ratio is listed as 1.37:1, so the HD version is been cropped, and the original version is only been provided in SD? that sounds dreadful if accurate, I expect better from Warner Bros.

It was released theatrically, so unless it was projected in 1.33:1, it would have been cropped then too.

Depending how it's like on the film elements, it could've very well been made open matte that was safe for both 4:3 and 16:9. If that's the case, they should've at least released it with both ratios as an option like they did with Mask of the Phantasm. Warner Archive (and WB) though doesn't usually do crop jobs (from my knowledge), so hopefully this looks good.

Yeah, but point still is the same, was a straight to home video movie, never went to theaters.

The TV version is in SD (what ever that is) and are you basing the OAR on IMDB?

Yeah, so from I what I've seen, on Blu-ray, Warner Archive has always kept the original ratio as they were intended (if it's made in 4:3, then the Blu is 4:3). I don't even remember any full-on, non Archive, Warner Home Video releases that have cropped picture, heck their recent Samurai Jack complete series Blu-ray had the show in its original 4:3 (outside of the new fifth season, which was made in 16:9). So this being 16:9 is a curiosity, I honestly don't think it's a crop like people are jumping to.

I think a simple blog post or press release would explain this OAR issue, does WAC do that type of thing? From the details it reads to me the hd feature is 16x9, tv version 4x3 is sd. Wasnt this made for tv in the first place? I recall fade outs for commercial breaks.
