I just picked up one of these 2309 receivers last weekend and got everything hooked up, programed and sounding GREAT. I do have a question for anybody that can help.......
I am running everything hooked up with HDMI cables. I have a HD cable box, a Sony PS3, and even my old HDDVD all plugged in and working. However, my HD audio light has never lit up. I have played every kind of DVD I have... BRay, HDDVD, Standard, Dolby Digital, Dolby True, Uncompressed 5.1, etc. My display always either says Multi Line or Dolby Digital and all of my speaker indicators are lit. The sound is especially impressive on Batman Dark Knight (Dolby True) with my PS3 set to linear PCM. No complaints at all. I usually use STD surround mode for Big BOOM movies and use PURE mode for non-action movies. Just wondering what the HD audio light is for since it has never came on. Is it something just for CD's or digital music sources??
Thanks.

Just buy it from 6th Ave. That's going to be a pressing issue with that big blue box. I never price match, if I see it cheaper than the big box I buy it. That place is suspect on price-matching online items.

Also just noticed that the receiver pictured at the top of the thread displays Dolby True HD. I can't figure out why I only get Dolby Digital, or multi line displayed. If I play a movie with Dolby True, my display says multi line. What am I doing wrong?

what is your bluray player? if its a ps3 the light will never light up but you are receiving hd audio just that the ps3 decodes it not the receiver

It should pop up on your HDdvd player because that is decoded in TrueHD, but the PS3 will never show up on the receiver, only multi-channel. You'll be able to hear a difference between your PS3 and HD dvd audio.

OK. I think I got it.

If you have a Dolby True HD movie-
Since the PS3 will not bitstream Dolby True HD, you must use your linear PCM setting so as to let the PS3 do the decoding and simply send the signal through the receiver direct to the speakers. You can verify what you are listening to by pressing the display button on the PS3 and you will see Dolby True HD displayed at the top of your screen. However your receiver will only say multi line in since it is not processing anything.

On the other hand, if your DVD/movie only offers Dolby Digital 5.1, I have found that setting the PS3 to bitstream and thus allowing the receiver to then do the decoding produces a much richer and higher quality sound than leaving the PS3 set to linear PCM where the PS3 would do the decoding.

So it would seem that my receiver (Denon AVR-2309CI) does do a better job of producing quality sound when it receives a bitstream signal. However, the PS3 will not bitstream Dolby True HD, so if you want DTHD, you have no choice other than to select Linear PCM. Playing a Dolby True HD movie on the PS3 with the setting on bitstream will only allow the receiver to decode it as Dolby Digital 5.1.

The solution- Now I need a higher end Blu-ray player that will in fact bitstream Dolby True HD.... like a DenonDVD-1800BD.

Again... I am NO expert on this stuff. I am trying to just get it figured out. The more I figure out, the more expensive it gets!

Question

Hey, new member here. Since the 2809 has already been mentioned, I hope you don't mind me asking about it. I've seen other positive mentions of 6ave elsewhere but have not dealt with them personally. I'm looking at the Denon 2809ci and notice they are asking $1200 for it online. Of course if the coupon works that goes down to $900. Amazon is $1K.

I was also looking at Definitive ProCinema speakers but online they don't have much and they are black.

Has anyone just called them to get prices and order? Maybe you can get a better deal that way.

BTW, has anyone used the Denon Ipod dock, ASD-11R? I was wondering how well it works.

They are an authorized dealer, have no worries.

My dad just bought a 60" Pioneer Plasma from them last month. Good stuff! Can't beat the prices.

Edit: Call them, tell them Amazon has it for $999, they will price match...then tell them you would like to use coupon code AFLAUD25. You may get lucky and get this Denon for $750!

Good idea. Is that code only for AVRs or could it be applied to speakers also? Can't hurt to try.

Just bought one today for $570ish. Seems like a good price on a great receiver. Looking forward to getting this.

I have had this receiver for a little while now and I bought an Aperion 5.1 setup. I really love the clarity of everything. I was just wondering what is your normal decibel level for listening. I am normally at -15 to -20 depending on the source. I have calibrated everything with the built in mic and an SPL meter. Just wondering what your specs are. I do find that I need to turn it to -10 to -7 at times. Is this normal/OK? I have also read that Aperions generally need a lot of juice to get them to output nicely so that could be the partial problem.

Thanks

What are the major differences between this model and the 2808CI? The 2808CI is less expensive and more powerful, but i am unsure if it has all the bells and whistles of the 2309CI. Your input is greatly appreciated as i plan to buy one or the other this weekend.

The 2808ci is a little more powerful and have the Audyssey MultiEQ XT. But lack the Dynamic EQ (wich is awesome if you don't listen to stuff at reference level..). The 2309 have MultiEQ witch is also very good and the Dynamic EQ. Imho it's worth it. If you can have a good price on the 2309 take it.

I didn't care for auto setup before, but the Audyssey is doing a real good job with my speakers on my 3808ci Upgraded with the FPU Pack ...

Hey guys, sorry if this isn't the right place but I picked up a AVR-2809CI today (ordered from 6th Ave, but cancelled because my friend who works at Ultimate priced matched at $850 after tax) and when I choose to upscale the picture to 1080p, it doesn't. What am I doing wrong? I am connecting it to a KDL-52XBR4. Thanks

Will this AVR-2309CI receiver at 100 watts per channel be adequate to power the new speakers I have ordered which are rated for 20-300 watts with 89 db sensitivity?

I usually have mine around -35 to -45. The loudest I can listen to music is at -15. I do have a small living room though, and the Infinity speakers I have are very efficient.
