Default Onkyo TX-SR606 Help Can't get True HD?

Hello thanks for reading. I bought a Onkyo TX-SR606 yesterday and hooked it up to my Sony BDP-350. I thought that the Onkyo would broadcast the Sony Blueray in True HD, but when I switch through the different inputs the True HD light never comes on. The red DTS light comes on when the input is on Neo:6 though even though I only have 5.1 surround.

Does anyone know how I can get the receiver to broadcast my Blueray player in True HD?

Also I hooked the FM antenna up in the back of the receiver and am only getting 2 stereo speakers to run with it. The Subwoofer and surround don't work with the radio?

Also I hooked up my X-Box 360 to the component with an optical cable since its a older model and doesn't have HDMI but can not get surround sound for that either. Only the 2 stereo speakers and subwoofer works with no option to change to surround.

Thanks for your help as this is all new to me.

how is the receiver connected to the blu player?

Is the blu player set to bit stream?

Are you selecting the lossless audio track from the movie menu?

Also, what movie were you trying to watch?

Can you change the output settings on the XBOX 360 to bitstream audio over the optical instead of LPCM? (I don't remember, I sold mine almost two years ago)

I'm in the sAme boat this guy is. When using the BDP-S350 audio output options it does not say the word "bitstream" anywhere. What should the menu be set to exactly if you want your onkyo 606 to decode ALL your blu ray audio?

Just make sure you have BD Audio Settings set to 'Direct' instead of 'Mix' on the S350. When I play Dark Knight and have TrueHD audio selected on the BD, the 606 outputs TrueHD. Same for a BD with DTS-HD Master, etc.

From what I understand audio should be set to direct on the player.

I have it connected using a brand new HDMI cable. I'm not sure what bit stream is or lossless audio track. I did go into the blue ray menu screens and was just looking for a option to set true hd up but didn't see anything. I guess I was just hoping that when I connected my blue ray with the Onkyo it would automatically set up the best sound possible. i guess it's not that easy.

Ok because I put in the Dark Knight last night and the best sound I could get was the red DTS light coming on the receiver. i will try changing the audio settings to Direct on the S350 when I get home from work and see if that helps.

Any ideas about my X 360 not playing games in surround?

Nah, lemme check later. I played COD 5 this past weekend and heard surround, but I didn't notice the audio lights. But I'm also using the HDMI port on my 360, though. I think component audio is only two-channel, so that could be the reason too.

Yeah, I think the radio is only 2-channel PCM too, but you should be getting subwoofer I think. Check the listening modes chart in the 606 user manual...

I have on direct. Do any of the options below have to be tampered with? Such as the Dolby category, DTS category etc.
Also how do you have True HD set on your BD player if you are bitstreaming it? The only reason I don't decode either Dolby or DTS on the BD player is because it doesn't do DTS-MA so I just keep it simple and bitstream both.

Yup, Dolby and DTS set if receiver is capable of decoding these, which the 606 is.

I have TrueHD audio set on the disc, not the player. There are 5 audio formats on TDK:

English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1
English: Dolby Digital 5.1
English: Dolby Digital 2.0
French: Dolby Digital 5.1
Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1

The 606 does do DTS-HD Master so with the player set to 'Direct' and if the disc audio is formatted and set to DTS-HD Master, you will hear that.

I don't bitstream since I use HDMI connections.

hope this helps.

Thanks for your help as this is all new to me.

1. You have to have a movie that has TrueHD, and you have to select that track. In order to see "TrueHD" on the receiver, you have to bitstream it. According to what others have said, you'll need to select "Direct" on your player.

2. FM/stereo by definition IS only two channel. If you want to matrix it out you'll need to select one of the surround sound modes. Your sub will only get action if the music has frequencies in it that are below your crossover threshold, if you have one set.

3. As mentioned, make sure HDMI audio output is set to OFF as Crackin mentioned- otherwise it'll only output 2.0. In the 360, make sure you have the correct sound selected- I believe there's an option there for Dolby Digital. The 360 bitstreams it already so you don't need to change anything there. Assuming you do that correctly you should see Dolby Digital light up when you fire up the 360.

Ok so I took your suggestions and went into my BlueRay player and changed it to Direct. When I started the Dark Knight my Onkyo receiver still doesn't say True HD. The Red DTS light comes on but still no True HD. Is there anything that I'm missing? Thanks.

That worked. Awesome Thanks! Now if I can just get my receiver to say True HD on the screen when I play my BD i'll be happy.

and you selected Dolby TrueHD 5.1 as the audio format on the disc itself (press Audio on the S350 remote)?

Hold on just noticed that my surround speakers are not working at all even though the receiver says True HD on it. When I press the Audio button on the remote it says English Dolby TrueHD 3/2.1 48kHz. Any ideas.
