Both films are 1.85:1 ratio, so unless you are able to turn off overscan on your TVs (and many brands will not allow that), you won't see letterbox bars.

Edit: hanumang's got you covered!
Both Cloverfield and Sleep Hollow were shot in an 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio which is very close to your 16:9 TV's 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. As a result, with overscan, they may appear to take up the whole screen. If you have no overscan than the studio doing the encoding (Paramount) slightly opened the framing to 1.78:1. This is most certainly normal. Some movies are Scope (2.35:1, 2.40:1, etc.) and some are flat (1.85:1); moreover, some movies were shot in 4:3 with black pillar bars on the left and right of your screen. Welcome to the world of original and varying Aspect Ratio! ![]() |
