Hi,
A shame that it's cut (compulsory, though, so not Second Sight's fault), but the ommission of the complete FINAL CUT documentary is a real shame. ![]() Someone, somewhere, needs to do a multi-disc Blu-Ray release of this film, featuring: 1) The Director's 219-minute Cut of the film AND 2) The Theatrical 148-minute Cut of the film AND 3) All of the extras from the UK and US Blu-Ray sets AND 4) The complete FINAL CUT documentary Pooch |

That cover's lovely, josuv22. Thanks for posting it. It's the same shot, but I like its treatment here more than the Criterion cover. (Assuming the sepia is in the final artwork.)
If I hadn't already bought the Criterion release, I would for sure have bought this one. But unlike this version the Criterion has none of Michael Epstein's documentary, so I think I'll try to track it down separately, given that the commercial failure and slashing of this film is one of the great Hollywood stories of its period. Update: It's hardly the same as having it on a Blu-ray, but I've found that the full documentary is available on YouTube. Last edited by MacEachaidh; 09-27-2013 at 03:28 AM. |

Did anyone else find the sound and image really crap compared to Criterion on this? I tried showing this to my girlfriend who gave up after 40 minutes anyway and I had to change the discs because on the Second Sight disc the sound quality was so crap compared to the criterion and the image looked a lot sharper as well on the criterion. I'm happy I have both even if it's only for the extras on the Second Sight one.

Even without the censor cuts, Cimino's made some strange changes that are less effective than the original roadshow version: the shot of Averill's future wife in the window at Harvard has been reversed, the pre-intermission shot of John Hurt disappearing in the train's steam has been truncated and no home video version has ever included the original freeze frame ending from the 70mm prints.

Also, I think this is one of those discs that has that notorious encoding glitch where the black levels are knocked out of whack, hence why it looks 'milkier' than the Criterion disc, which could be why people have complained about detail (remember it's a soft-looking film, like many films Zsigmond worked on). If you alter the contrast and brightness levels on your set it's easily fixable (but obviously inconvenient). Just thought I'd pop a note in for anyone who might have some slight discomfort with this disc. ![]() |
