Default Got a new TV! Now what?

Hey guys! Just picked up a Samsung 46" LCD. Haven't hooked it up yet, but that's because i need your help.

I know you all like to do crazy calibrating and leaving it on for 9001 hours straight on some flashy light thing as well as do medical research on the TV before even watching anything on it - im just curious what that is.

I will do a calibration thing using Ratatouille once i plug'er in, but what else should i do?

Despite temptations, i'm not turning it on yet. Its been in a cold Canadian warehouse for a long time now, and i don't think turning it on just yet is the greatest idea ever.

So yeah, Any tips on what i should do before playing with it?

Thumbs up

X-Ninja just put the TV on and enjoy it...Give it a few days or even weeks to break in before you think about calibration and such..

Enjoy your new toy

Depends on HOW cold it got.. rapid temp change is a bad thing
was it cosy in its little box ?? If it was cold enough to cause the glass
to feel cold... it was way cold

as far as "now what"... prepare to start spending money

My current setup-

I love it...

Anyway, yes.. That's an Onkyo 605 sitting on the floor. Gotta move that pronto.
TV will be mounted once i get on monoprice later tonight. Just showing you all my TV even though you don't care.

Screw it, im gonna hook it up and calibrate it...

EDIT: The wall is red... for some reason, in that picture it looks pink. And, the flowers on the bed in the corner... That's because there's no sheets on it at the moment. so no, i'm not a woman.

First off, nice new TV, secondly, that mess of wires all plugged into the wall.... get a surge protector, even a cheap one or at least a power strip, third, AV rack and you will be looking really good.... don't post in the gallery yet, or everyone will give you low ratings because of the mess... No Offense.

Congrats, it looks nice.... and the flowers on the bed... j/k

1. Thank you!

2. I shall... next time i get to Factory Direct. They've got a cool surge protector that organizes all your wires. A friend of mine has one. (and for the record, you cant see the wires anymore. They've been hidden. and the 605 is now on a stand full of every Star Trek VHS ever. Anyone wanna buy some Star Trek VHS's? )

3. Hehe. Yeah i know. The TV sitting on a shoe/boot rack in my bedroom isn't really the nicest looking thing in the world, huh?

4. Yeah i know. This is far from done.

Oh, and everybody- I calibrated my TV. But, um... I totally messed it up and everything looks all dark now. I obviously messed something up, whatever though.
Thanks for the help guys!

you probably didn't mess up as bad as you think.

most people are shocked at how dark a properly calibrated tv will look compared to factory settings.

what model tv do you have?

you have a samsung LCD, so here is usually where I tell people I know where to start from and then adjust accordingly from there.... your tv is 46", I have a 40" so you will prolly find these settings around where you want it, but you will probably need to adjust some. Also, I watch a lot of movies in a dark to dim environment, so I am setup for that.

Mode movie
Contrast 80-90
Brightness 45-50
Sharpness 0-20 (i have it a 0)
color 45(this you will have to determine)
tint 49/51
backlight 4-5
color tone normal
DNR off

Detailed settings
black adjust off
dynamic contrast off
Gamma 0
color space wide
edge enhancement off
xvYCC on

settings
HDMI Black Level low

"AVS HD 709 aims to provide a free set of calibration patterns for high definition video players. In this post you will find downloads to create discs for Blu-ray and HD DVD players, and you will also find MP4 1080p video for computers or other compatible devices. The Blu-ray and HD DVD discs can be burned to DVD media, but they are intended only for HD players. These calibration patterns are not intended for standard DVD players, and they are not expected to calibrate for Rec. 601 video used in commercial DVDs. The patterns are meant only to calibrate for Rec. 709 encoded HD video, such as commercial Blu-rays or HD DVDs."

Suprising that those are free... Anyway, Thanks! Maybe if i get bored one day or if Killzone 2 decides to touch my hands, then ill use one of them. As for right now though, i like what im seeing here...
Mainly because i went through the iMac calibration settings and this site looks exactly the same on the PS3 as it does on the Mac. That's a good sign.

Just burned the iso, threw it into the PS3, started it, looked at it, got totally confused on what to do, and gave up.
Does anybody have... any idea how to use this thing?
