A couple people in the thread I linked to earlier are flat out saying the subtitles can be turned off during playback, just not from the menu.
You should be able to turn the subtitles off by using the subtitle button on your remote. |

I didn't initially understand what you meant by "switching subtitles on the fly," and since I've only ever bothered with subtitles through the language menu, it didn't occur to me at all. I guess I kind of breezed past that part. I'm sorry for causing you to make a false alarm on your other forum, but I'd just like to say in my defense, that I never confirmed that the subtitles were "locked," though admittedly my diction indicates that I assumed so after viewing some of the replies. After all, my reason for coming to this thread in the first place was to find if there was a work-around. Again, I appreciate your help and I am glad to find out that this release does not have locked subtitles. |

Using the 'Audio' button on the blu-ray remote lets it be changed, but even in that popup all audio tracks are marked as 'ENG' as if they are all english. Though the 2nd one is actually the japanese, and the third is the japanese commentary. Someone messed up. Very annoying for something so basic. |

I bought this recently from the Sentai Filmworks site after finding out this was made by the same person who made Your Name
I'd like to say I'm watching it soon but between buying 30 movies from Black Friday and still being behind on prior hauls, it may be a while before I get to watch this |

I liked this one, it's really good. But if I had to give a recommendation I'd recommend Garden of Words over this one. Not hating on this one, I'm glad with my purchase and I'll likely rewatch again but Garden of Words is better in my opinion

Given that both Children Who Chase Lost Voices ($8) and Garden of Words ($11) are currently discounted heavily at Right Stuf, I'd take a flyer on both.
While not as inexpensive as the other two aforementioned Shinkai titles, 5 Centimeters Per Second ($22) is also quite worthwhile. It's a pity that "Voices of a Distant Star" is OOP and "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" has only a Hong Kong BD as its sole English-friendly Region-A release. For "The Place Promised in Our Early Days", the best deal for a new copy that I could find currently is for the standard case edition via Play-Asia for $28 shipped. If you want the digipak version, Blowitoutahere has that one for $30.35 shipped.
Either way, that's actually a quite reasonable final shipped price for a single Hong Kong BD. The MSRP set by Deltamac for that disc is HKD 179, which translates to $23. While the prices from Play-Asia and Blowitoutahere aren't technically "sale prices" by US retail standards, at least they're not ripping you off with hidden surcharges or inflated shipping costs either. I also bought 5 Centimeters Per Second around the same time, and I did watch that. I thought it was good, just not great. Which is pretty much how I feel about The Garden of Words. By the way, I thought The Place Promised in our Early Days was pretty weak, to be honest. EDIT: I finally got around to watching it and I thought it was okay at best. (beautifully animated though) It felt like a shallow cross between Castle in the Sky and Tales From Earthsea, especially the latter. Last edited by gwfb5; 03-03-2018 at 03:31 AM. |

How does the "Sentai Selects" blu-ray version compare to the original Sentai blu-ray release? Are the two versions visually identical?
