Default Matthias & Maxime (2019, Xavier Dolan)

"Dolan is currently in the last stages of post-production on his English-language debut, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.

He has already lined up his next project for a possible premiere in 2019 as well: Matt & Max, a French-language drama that will focus on friends in their late 20s.

Matt & Max will be shot in his native Quebec with French Canadian actors who are also Dolan’s friends, which seems apt given that friendship is one of its major themes.

No doubt the most welcome news for his fans is the fact he hopes to cast his muse, Anne Dorval — who played the iconic maternal characters in both Mommy and I Killed My Mother — in the role of Max’s mother. Dolan himself will play Max." Source.

I fell in love with the trailers for J'ai Tué Ma Mére and Les Amours Imaginaires immediately at the time of their release. But no theatre was playing those and they still had no TV premiere where I live.

Recently I saw Mommy, which was great. But also Tom à la Ferme and Laurence Anyways, both a bit underwhelming. I thought they looked more then fine visually, but he lost focus both times telling the story, imo. So, I hope this new project is a "Mommy".

Reactions from Cannes are divisive (not surprisingly when it comes to Dolan):

Screen International: "This earnest drama aspires to the sweeping, grandiose heights of Xavier Dolan’s best work"

Alex Billington - "Screened in 35mm. A story of how a kiss can ignite a spark, a feeling that just won't go away. Feels like this was made in the early 2000s and pulled out of a vault. Doesn't come together as nicely as I hoped, but glad to see Dolan experimenting."

Richard Lawson - "MATTHIAS & MAXIME is great! A poignant character study that’s sad and a little sexy and is made with care and restraint. A new era of Dolan dawns?"

Jason Gorber - " Xavier Dolan tells a drawn out story of friends with a spark that never manages to fully ignite. It lacks bite and direction, feeling more indulgent than anything despite some brief moments of warmth"

Emma Stefansky - "MATTHIAS & MAXIME is another sweetness from Dolan, about how agonizing it is to watch people take their own pain out on the ones they love the most. someone dabs in this"

Ella Kemp - "MATTHIAS ET MAXIME is Xavier Dolan’s most tender and generous feature. It’s wonderful to see him so comfortable, mastering all the stories he knows so well: brotherhood, motherhood, friendship, affection. This film is so easy to love!"

Niels - "MATTHIAS & MAXIME is a tender Dolan; a dramedy on friendship blues, queerness, dysfunctional families. Feels like Fassbinder at its best moments, a tad too sentimental at others but overall: heartfelt, funny, beautiful aesthetics."

Leonardo Goi - "As someone who owes Dolan a great deal of emotional wreckage for MOMMY and LAWRENCE ANYWAYS (as was among those rare creatures who didn’t think IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD was that bad), MATTHIAS & MAXIME felt unnervingly flat & didactic. A return to form? Not yet"

Adam Woodward - "Xavier Dolan and I are friends again. Matthias and Maxime is sweetly observed, soulful filmmaking. Will be spinning Phosphorescent for the next few weeks."

Didn't understand a single word, but Florence and "Cosmic Love" in the trailer made me happy and soo excited for the movie

By the way, it's a shame that Dolan's The Death and Life of John F. Donovan is still unavailable in a language I speak (english or german).

Has there been anything about a US release for this? Happened to think of it as I'm about to watch I Killed My Mother for the first time. Plus I should get John F. Donovan from Netflix DVD next week.

Anyway, here's a trailer with English subtitles.

Xavier Dolan's barely 30 and has already racked up a wonderfully impressive filmography. Along with Asghar Farhadi ("The Salesman") Sean Baker ("The Florida Project") and newcomer Joe Talbot ("The Last Black Man in San Francisco"), I'd rank him among the most exciting directors currently working. Though I've found much to enjoy in all his films, I consider "Mommy" and "Laurence Anyways" to be flat-out masterpieces. Got a chance to see "Matthias & Maxime" during its theatrical run in Toronto late last year. It's wonderful, loose yet polished, emotionally rewarding and definitely among his best. With especially sensitive onscreen work from Dolan himself and actress Micheline Bernard, with another addition to the growing gallery of rich performances he's coaxed out of veteran actresses. {Nathalie Baye is amazing in both "Laurence Anyways" and "It's Only the End of the World" and Anne Dorval should have won the 2014 Oscar for "Mommy"}. It's a shame "Matthias & Maxime" seems to be so hard to see in the U.S. It's definitely worth seeking out.

I feel like his other films can be hard to find too. Apparently It's Only the End of the World never received a DVD release in the US. No idea how I can see it. Netflix doesn't have the disc for Tom At The Farm. Looks like I can rent that on Amazon for $5 though.

Acquired by MUBI.

Quote:
Streaming platform MUBI has acquired multi-territory rights to Xavier Dolan’s Cannes 2019 drama Matthias & Maxime.

Curated arthouse service MUBI has acquired the VOD and TV rights in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, LATAM (excl. Mexico) and India. The film will debut on the service in those markets – where it hasn’t had a theatrical run yet – this summer.

I got Mubi just so I could see this. I liked it but didn't love it as much as I hoped I would. I honestly found the friend group a bit annoying and their conversations pretty uninteresting. The film has a couple of great moments though and overall I was interested in what would happen regarding the title character's friendship.
