Nova Media has announced their next Nova Exclusive to be the Taiwanese "A Brighter Summer Day". They are negotiating on including an OST CD.

".....is a movie describing the boy’s childhood and disturbed Taiwanese History directed by the Edward Yang who represents the Taiwanese New Wave.
When it was released, it didn’t have a success but soon it was praised by many directors and critics. Also, in last November, it has been theatrically re-released to show the power of the movie.

At first, this can be a strange movie but movie has a great depth and stories that you will enjoy. "A Brighter Summer Day" will include very detailed commentary by a critic to explain the movie in more depth...."

I looked into it a bit more but couldn’t really make out. It does seem that they’re for sale in Taiwan only though, via some weird event. Google Translate was being a bit funny as usual, but maybe someone can make heads or tails out of this Facebook post and its comments.

Yeah, I tried searching for those Taipei Story and Yi YI discs, but they are not found on the usual online stores like YesAsia or JSDVD. A shame, really.

I want that Taipei Story disc, because I'm disappointed that Criterion didn't release Taipei as a single release.

Given the high price of the Taiwanese blu-rays of "Brighter" and "Beach," however, it might actually be cheaper to wait for the next B&N sale and get the Criterion box with "Taipei Story" in it.

Yes, they sold this two-film set only through an event, 4 sets max each person. They will also prepare 200 sets to sell online for people couldn't come to the event. (if the prepared sets didn't sold out in the event, they will put those into the online selling too.) The online selling will only last 11 days.

But it's a shame the Yi Yi blu-ray here is sourced from the Criterion blu-ray, they didn't access the brand new restoration of it which came to the theatres in Taiwan last year.

237 minutes of slow burn . . . with a tragic turn at the end.

This movie was Chen Chang's very first role (the desert bandit from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon). It's a very much a period film that shows as it was back in 60's in Taiwan (I think) based on the real event. Heart warming and heart breaking at the same time.
