Haven't you heard? Now it's the reversal of the poles that "could" wipe out our electrical grid and cause havoc. We're technically "overdue" for a reversal by several hundred years now.

People have commented on the possibly of losing access to movies, and Air Force One was mentioned. I will mention another. Borat. I have the DVD. The studio was sued and forced to remove some scenes. I also had it digitally. I cannot swear to this, but I firmly believe the digital service deleted the offending scenes from my downloaded copy after it was downloaded. I do not believe it has been released on blu-ray.
I am not totally against download or streaming services, as long as they do not supplant physical media or theaters. While I love Stranger Things and Mindhunter, I am deeply troubled when I hear that the next Cloverfield film will buypass theaters or Beast of No Nation will not get a physical release. I watch Game of Thrones, but I will have the blu-ray to have the best quality of a show I love. I will not do this for everything, but I would want the option. |

This article reminds me of Christmas time. Last Christmas (not the most recent one, but the one prior), my girlfriend's family wanted to watch Die Hard since it's their Christmas time movie. They thought they had it on DVD but couldn't find it so they decided to try and stream it, couldn't find it on any of the services they subscribed to, so they weren't able to watch it even though it's tradition.
Cut to this past Christmas, I got them the Die Hard Blu-ray Collection so they were able to watch it and now they'll never have to worry again. I don't trust digital services, at least the legal kind, for being able to supply whatever you want to watch at any time. |

Obviously, I enjoy watching movies/TV shows on Blu/DVD.
However, I have nothing against streaming as well. I stream some things, and watch others via physical media. There's nothing that says you can't do both. |

If you're just downloading the film itself, you're also losing all of the extras, the booklet essay(s), and, unless you have unlimited storage capacity and can keep hundreds of 25-50 GB files on your hard drives, the film itself will be of compressed, and therefore compromised, quality.

I also enjoy having my physical collection but I also watch things on Netflix, Hulu & Prime. It's a good way sometimes to watch a movie before you buy & its saved me from making more then a few blind buys I would have regretted. There will never be a replacement for my collection however.

Reading this article, this happens to me all the time with classic movies. I wanted to introduce Groundhog Day to my kids who are older now.
Not on Netflix or any streaming service. (in Canada) Not on TV (I searched and sadly, no channel is playing it today and I have a lot of TV stations) Only place is a channel called Hollywood Suite for $6 a month. Minimum 2 months subscription. No thanks. And now I'm seeing physical media getting reduced in stores, Best Buy doesn’t have it and going to Walmart is a joke with their movies. So I went to Sunrise Records and snagged it for $10. I get to keep a copy and add to my library. ![]() And movies go out of print. I remember snagging Dogma at a Walmart Black Friday for $5 many years ago. That sucker is pricey now and they don't know if it will ever get a release again due to rights issues involving the Weinsteins. Willow is also another of my movies I snagged years ago. Never thought this sucker would be pricey OOP. Last edited by El Baz; 02-02-2018 at 10:45 PM. |

I just saw this article about Best Buy pulling CD's and Target only paying CD Labels when Customers buy the CD.
Sure, this is only about the MUSIC CD's going under because of online downloads......but MOVIE/VIDEO physical media is next. https://www.billboard.com/articles/b...-cds-only-when |

I'll continue to buy UHDs since it is roughly the equivalent of what most films are shot in. It is not going obsolete anytime soon and neither is BD. I have researched this thoroughly and it would take an internet overhaul of the entire backbone in the US to get even close to what physical media brings to the table. We're talking billions of dollars worth of infrastructure work across the entire country. This is why the smaller 1st world countries have some of the best internet in the world. So, with that understanding physical media is going to be around for a long time.

In the UK a lot of people found out the hard way about just how long the 'in perpetuity' they could keep their digital download collections was when the BBC shut down their download service - which offered many titles that never had a physical release - after just 18 months and they could no longer access them. Rather amusingly many of their DVD and Bluray releases contain ads with various celebs talking about how wonderful the digital BBC Store was, so you can at least keep the commercial on the format their defunct service was intended to replace:

I think there is a Warner Classics streaming service or something, but it still doesn't have everything. Heck, he was talking about a movie from 1997 that he was not able to stream. I don't see very many movies from the 80's that are streaming but what the hell I'll even start from there. 46.9% of my movies are from 1980 on. So 53.1% of what I own spans from 1920-1979. I can guarantee the majority of those films either aren't streaming at all, and if they are, they either aren't in the proper aspect ratio, don't have the correct audio, have none of the special features I have on my discs, and might not be in High Definition.
I like a lot of really really old movies, most people do not, therefore they hardly stream very much of it because it's not in high demand. For what I want physical media is a must. If one day they manage to restore and catalogue the entire gamut of the film industry, I'd be game. But I'm not expecting that to happen anytime soon. |

Even though the introduction of home video made studios tons of money in the beginning, Hollywood was never crazy about the idea of people owning physical copies of their films to watch at their leisure. That skittishness has come to the forefront in the digital/ streaming age; studios are salivating at the prospect of regaining full control of their film libraries and going back to the system of dictating when people can watch a film. If I were suddenly thrust back in time to the 70's I would probably commit suicide if I had to wait until Thanksgiving to watch King Kong on a 19 inch TV with rounded corners.
Studios or streaming services will NOT control what I watch - I will. Even if physical media were discontinued tomorrow I have a large enough physical collection to last me the rest of my life and then some. Kids can watch as many Step Up sequels as they please on their iPhones - me, I've got a sweet 75 incher that keeps me happy 24/7. |

I love having a library of films in my own home, my own personal blockbuster. Sometimes I’ll even take the discs out of their cases and hide them so I get that old feeling of being disappointed after lifting the clamshell and finding no vhs behind it. Ahh memories

Streaming is not really an option for people that like films that are further from the mainstream (and in this case with Air Force One, sometimes not even for those that only like Hollywood stuff).
I do enjoy Netflix to check out some shows or their own productions, but too many of the films I have in my collection are too niche to ever land on a service like that. I watch lots of asian movies or indie & arthouse, also shlocky 80ies horror - and those kind of films are always hard to find on these kinds of sevices. I’d probably only find around 30% of my collection on a streaming service. So that’s not an option at all. I am physical all the way. I even go as far to buy a DVD copy of a film that I might already own in digital-HD. Lots of smaller films get HD versions on itunes but only get a physical Dvd release. I will buy the HD file for watching and then also the DVD to have a copy for my shelf. (Anybody else does that? I always feel that’s taking it too far, but I do want a physical thing to own for a movie that I like). |

I've been able to amass a 4,000 film library without ever stepping foot in a single Best Buy or Target (other than for the then-Best Buy exclusive of Poltergeist and a couple of recent 4K discs), so I doubt if either store dumping physical media altogether would have any affect on me. It's not like they carry anything from any label other than SF anyway.
