Hong Kong As Tears Go By (HK)

This was Wong Kar Wai's first film. It stars Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung and Maggie Cheung. I haven't see this one, but since I really enjoyed Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Days of Being Wild, and In the Mood For Love, I pulled the trigger on this Blu-ray. The price isn't too bad. Release date was 1/02 according to Play-Asia; YesAsia has it coming out this Tuesday.

Got it on Friday and took a quick look over the weekend - it looks exactly as one would expect.

Soft and grainy (as shot), but taken from a print that was cleaned up nicely. Colors are solid and vibrant. Defintely an upgrade from my Korean Alto DVD version (which I believe was the best looking home version available before now). Unfortunately its still slightly cropped to 1.78:1.

Looking forward to the review.

I ordered this from PlayAsia. Should hopefully be here soon. Shipping takes a while from HK. I also noticed that Amazon will be carrying it (it's available for preorder).

I did receive the Painted Skin Blu-ray a couple of days ago. I can post some impressions once I've had a chance to watch it.

I watched this tonight. I liked the movie. There's more action than you might expect from a Wong Kar-Wai film, but the director's style is certainly evident, if not fully formed yet. Andy Lau is good, and Maggie Cheung is radiant. Some aspects haven't dated too well, and just scream the '80s (which may not be a bad thing, depending on your tastes).

I didn't watch the Blu-ray on a full HD display, but I didn't notice any problems with the transfer. The subtitles have a few typos, but they're not too bad. One thing I wasn't a fan of: When the menu comes up, it starts showing spoilers from the movie.

Overall, though, a worthy purchase.

I find this to be its biggest charm (which goes for a lot of 70s and 80s classic HK cinema). On a somewhat related note, Jonnie To celebrates precisely this specific element (the dating and 70s/80s atmosphere) in his beautiful Sparrow.

The back of this blu-ray lists the running time at 88 mins, however the dvd was 102 mins. Is this just a typo or is the blu-ray a cut version?

I have both a Korean release -- titled "Fatal Checkout" -- and the Kino release. The latter has excellent subtitles. How are they on this Blu-ray release?

The subs are serviceable, meaning you'll get the gist of everything. But it doesn't make for a good viewing experience. Thus I wouldn't recommend this release on that note unless you can get proper subs from another source.

They are, however, better than the subs on Days of Being Wild. Those aren't much better than a machine translation.

Yes, it's a typo. The actual running time is 99 min, so I'll try to get that corrected. But I don't know if the 3 min difference means it's been cut. Actually, I would be really interested to know if the DVD indeed runs 102 min as I can't recall having seen a version that long. I do realize IMDb states 102 min as the running time but still...

The 102-minute runtime on the IMDb could refer to the alternate version that (seemingly) ends with Wah in jail. Judging from the ending on Youtube, this version runs about two minutes longer, and with rounding it might be said to run 102 minutes:

Oh, I had totally forgot about the alternate ending. You might very well be right as that would indeed make it long enough.

In case of Days of Being wild its the same for the HK release. (the korean releases are actually ports of the HK releases) i think the source for these is some 10-15 years old and has already been used for the DVDs...
