I am about to purchase a TCL 55p605 display and was trying to decide what 4k player I should get. The Sony is $199.99 and the Xbox one s is $224.00. Getting the xbox would enable me to not only play games but also stream and play blurays in 4k. The sony would just be a stand alone unit that doesn't display Dolby Vision anyway. If you were me what would you do?

First off, get the X700. It has Netflix and Amazon in 4k/HDR and is getting DV this summer. Also streams at 24p. I have had the S and X, and just do not like them as players, so Id have a Xbox and X700.
If you dont game, the best combo is something like a $200 Sony and the ATV4K. |

I have Xbox One S and have some troubles getting 4k Blu-rays to load. Although, once they do load they play just fine. Only other issue is with The Martian Extended Edition, which, when watching the extended cut, the audio gets out of sync, but theatrical version is fine.
No Dolby Vision support currently. I haven't heard plans to add it but I'm sure it is a possibility. Gaming is a big selling point over a standalone player. Xbox One S can do a few games in HDR which look pretty great. |

No. As it stands, the FW hasn't been updated since the Fall, and as of right now there is no word if they will even update the streaming side of the equation. 12 months in, originally priced at $399, already obsolete. Quote:
Here's the breakdown for my experience: XB1S Pros: The console OS, games and apps are all 4K fantastic. HDR10? Yes. Bit-streamed audio and Atmos? Yes. MS is a SW company, so they are constantly improving the console and platform, and will continue to do so for the at least the next few years, making it reasonably future-proof. A large installed base provides a big incentive for app developers to write and update games and apps. For me, the UHD/Blu-ray/DVD disc drive has been rock solid, playing everything I've thrown at it for over a year, without issue – no skipping, no freezing, just playing. Now, there are bad discs out there, but that's another ball of wax. If you play discs often, spring for the media remote, as it's $25 bucks, and worth it. XB1S Cons: The con, and it's a big one if you play a great deal of UHD discs and are a stickler for image fidelity, is that there an issue with how console manages the color space for UHD discs. Blu-rays are fine, and MS is aware of it, and it's not as if it looks bad, it's just not accurate. Based on the beta updates, it should be addressed in the near future. Dolby Vision? No word as of yet, but I believe it will happen based on where DV is heading. X800 Pros: Solid HW, excellent feature + control set and all content looks and sounds exceptional. I have mine set to Direct and no upscaling, and discs have never looked better, including the XB1S. If you play a lot of discs and also stream the big apps, it's a very good value at $150. I picked up mine on sale for $150, and with a BB coupon, $115 OOP. X800 Cons: Like most UHD disc players, it can be a bit finicky for UHD discs. I've been lucky, but as you note, my Dad and many others have not. In fairness to Sony, the issue of UHD disc playback stability seems to be an issue across the board. That said, the X800 has widespread issues related to power, freezing, apps, you name it. My Dad had issues with it powering on, the drive door not responding, etc. Then there are the little things that add up. Old school 8-bit interface on a 4K bit of kit. No app updates. No DV. First priced at $399, then $299, then $199, then $149, back up to $199. The bottom line is the X800 is already obsolete and not likely to be updated beyond an app or two and stability, if that. Personally, I woudn't pay more than $100 bucks for it now, because the X700, while not as feature-rich with the exception of DV, will be selling for $150 before you know it, and who knows, $99 for BF. |
