so here is my newbie question. while shopping for a new tv last year my wife and I took a look at blu ray for the first time and were impressed with the way it looked. The movie was Pirates of the Caribbean and picture looked like the actors were really there. Now for xmas she surprised me with a BR player the panasonic dmp bd35 and we went out and got a couple movies expecting the video to be what we had seen, but were disappointed that it wasnt the life like video we had seen before. We were still impressed with the quality of the picture over regular dvd's, but was expecting a different view. We have a samsung 46" believe its either the a540 or 550. Now to the question, could it be what we saw was because of AMP and/or 120mhz tv or is there something I am missing in the setup? The tv is already at 1080p and the player is 1080p/24. HDMI cable. Thanks for any help

what movies did you get?
A couple factors also.... The display you saw was calibrated to over-saturate the contrast etc. and give it a "cartoonish vividness" to it.... I'd prefer NOT to watch movies like that, since it's vivid, but certainly not life-like. The other thing, some movies just aren't as impressive as far as blu-ray releases go.... POTC (although I haven't seen it on blu) is said to be a very good transfer, so the movies you got might be a little more lacking ![]() |

We got Harry potter order of the Phoenix, Night at the museum and national treasure. I was thinking it could be the movies we got, but would have though HP would have the same type of pop that POTC had. So should we just be expecting the HD quality that we have or is there more to BR than that as far as picture quality?

They are all good transfers so you should have seen a better image.
I guess what settings are you using. Look through the official 550 owners thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1005722) and the 550 calibration thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1020612) over at AVS for suggestions. Also, here is the Blu-ray.com Samsung display settings thread. (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=36086) Good luck! |
