Default The Best Year in Film History

Filmspotting put together their top 5 years in film and I thought it could use a little systematizing. So I put together a spreadsheet that started with the years I expected to be in the running for the best year, which then expanded to all years going back to 1930. I rated each film (that I'd seen) and totaled it up weighted towards the top 5. I then gave an extra two points for each year before 2000 and removed two points for each year after 2000 to ameliorate recency bias.

Top 5 Movie Years:

1. 1948
(The Red Shoes, Oliver Twist, Unfaithfully Yours, Germany Year Zero, Bicycle Thieves)

2. 1967
(In the Heat of the Night, Dirty Dozen, Bonnie and Clyde, Cool Hand Luke. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner)

3. 2011
(Tree of Life, Drive, Take Shelter, Midnight in Paris, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)

4. 1973
(The Exorcist, Badlands, Long Goodbye, The Sting, Paper Moon)

5. 2002
(The Pianist, 28 Days Later, Panic Room, Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report)

You can find my spreadsheet on Google Sheets. I've never shared a Google doc before, but I would think you could copy and paste it to plug in your own ratings. Right?

1999 and 2010 were quite memorable in recent history.

Off the top of my head, 1999 gave us:

The Matrix
The Sixth Sense
American Beauty
SW Ep 1

2010:
Inception
Black Swan
The Social Network
Toy Story 3

You just traded (possible) recency bias for older film bias.
With that 4-point swing all you did then was end up favoring older films over newer ones. Who is to say newer films weren't actually deserving of their rating and it had nothing to do with recency bias? Why dock them points? Likewise, older films aren't necessarily rated lower because of their age so they don't deserve 2 extra points just for their age.

I don't believe in recency bias. If anything, I think the opposite is true - people tend to rate older films a little higher than they deserve, just because they are "classic", while they are hesitant to rate recent films among the all-time greats

For me it's really 1964 or 1969, probably the latter.

You’re all going to laugh, but I loved 2016.

Arrival, Moonlight, Moana, Zootopia, La La Land, Elle, Jackie, 20th Century Women, The Lobster, Love & Friendship, Manchester By The Sea, Kubo and the Two Strings, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Hidden Figures, Being 17, Paris 05:59: Theo & Hugo, Rogue One, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Edge of Seventeen

And 2015, to a slightly lesser extent.

If you don't choose a year from the 80s, you're wrong.

Lol you put 1967 in there and you leave off what’s regarded as one of the best films that year

Yeah, that kind of infuriated me. Carry On Doctor towers over all of those so called "films".

We've had this discussion before, and the answer is still 1982.

Nah. 1995, 1999 and several other years are well above 1982.

1995 and 1999? Pray tell just what makes those years very good? I think 94 blows those away

94 is another great year.

1995 had Braveheart, Seven, Usual Suspects, Apollo 13, Crimson Tide, Desperado, 12 Monkeys, Heat, Casino, Before Sunrise, just to name a few....
1999 had Fight Club, Matrix, American Beauty, Thomas Crown Affair, Three Kings, Office Space, South Park, American Pie, Galaxy Quest, Go, Cruel Intentions, Iron Giant, Toy Story 2... and though they werent my tastes, also: Being John Malkovich, Eyes Wide Shut, Sixth Sense, Magnolia, Green Mile....

If people chose any year from the 80's they are blinded by nostalgia. That can be Saved for your favorite year thread.
