Mini-review, since I received a copy (for HiHD, not BD.com)
Movie - 1/5 To be totally upfront, I am a fan of Judd Apatow films. I think that films like 'The 40-year-old Virgin', 'Knock-Up', and 'Superbad' are some of the funniest films of all time. I can watch them repeatedly, and find new things to laugh at each them. It is because of this, that I am so disappointed with 'Pineapple Express'. Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) spends his days serving people legal documents and listening to talk radio. In order to curve his boredom, he visits his new dealer Saul Silver (James Franco) who invites him to try out some new product he has just gotten hold of. This one-of-a-kind super-weed called Pineapple Express is the best marijuana Dale has ever smoked, and Saul is the only dealer selling it. He buys a bag of heads off to his next job, serving Ted Jones, who, unbeknown to Dale, is the dealer who supplied Saul with the product. Still buzzing from his earlier party, Dale pulls up in front of Ted Jones' house and lights up a joint before serving him papers. All of the sudden, his attention is drawn to a large window in Jones' home where he sees an Asian man being shot in the head. Now a witness to the crime, and scared they would discover him, he throws the joint out the window and wrecks a few cars while driving from the scene. Unfortunately, the noise he made hitting the cars draws Jones outside, where he finds the joint - which, as the only source - he identifies as Pineapple Express. Knowing that he only has given that product to Saul, that is his first stopping place while looking for the witness. After Dale tells Saul of his misfortune, the two flee the area as they now find themselves caught in the middle of a violent dealer war that will possibly result in their own demise. Video - 4/5 As a new release, the film looks great on Blu-ray. While there are a ton of night scenes with fast action, the transfer never misses a beat. My only complaint is that blacks could be a touch darker, but besides that, Sony has provided an excellent transfer. Audio - 3/5 This dialog-heavy film is mostly two-dimensional, being very front heavy. The action scenes are intense and dynamic, but the dialog scenes seem almost dead. Even other dialog-heavy films add some background noise so you don't feel like you're in a vacuum, but this film feels dead when not in complete action. That may be the source, or it may be the disc, I don't know. Overall - 2/5 I wanted to like this film. I really did. Its just a mess of a film that has very little story with not enough quality humor and action to string it along. It almost feels like one comedy and one action film that had the worst parts of them cut out and placed in a toilet. Yes, its really that bad. I know some people love this film, and may say you need to be high to watch it, but I don't think that should be the case. I can watch films like 'Half Baked' all day - which is admittedly a stoner-film - while being sober, but why can't I watch this one? My only conclusion is that this is a horrible film. Sorry Judd. Sorry Seth. I expected much better from you. Edit: Had to write this quick, so please excuse spelling, grammar, flow... everything ![]() |

I agree with the previous review. Im a fan of Judd Apatow and everything from his movies to Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks, but this movie let me down. I thought it would be way more funnier, After Superbad I couldn't wait for this movie to come out, maybe I just overhyped it. James Franco and "Red" is prolly the only reason to watch the movie

+1 Watched 2/3rds of it Wednesday before turning it off. I found the acting flat, the story uninspired and flat out boring. Parts of it actually started to put me to sleep, and I usually like stoner films. I'd thought about giving PE another spin tonight to see if my opinion changes, but with three other discs to get to this weekend I think I'll pass. |

I agree with the review above.
I own Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up & Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I've watched Pineapple Express a total of 3 times, and it got less and less funny each time. It just lacks the humour that the other Apatow movies have. |

I thought Tropic Thunder was great too. I saw it in the theater and just picked it up on BD and watched it for the first time last night. Haven't seen PE.

I was really looking forward to this one based on the nearly perfect red band trailer from last spring. I must have played that trailer for a dozen friends. The pacing and feel (that M.I.A. track is PERFECT) really made this look like a Big Lebowski for the next generation.
Just as the Coen Brothers gave us a Raymond Chandler private eye story starring the least equipped protagonist imaginable (The Dude), Pineapple Express was shaping up as a Lethal Weapon-esque actioner with two completely unprepared fools bumbling through stunts, car chases and mob intrigue. Couldn't wait! Saw it in the theater, and couldn't help feeling like it just missed the bar. I thought at the time, and still think after viewing the Blu twice now, that the main problem is in the tone set by the theatrical score used for most of the action scenes. The movie has moments where incidental music is used to great effect (the forest montage, the two henchmen riding in their car listening to Bell Biv Devoe's Poison, etc,), and I think that's where the movie really shines. When the theatrical score kicks in, it seems to be trying way too hard to establish an over-serious, action movie feel. Perhaps it was done tongue-in-cheek, but it pulls me out of the film every time. For me it came sooooo close to working but not quite, and perhaps more input from the Music Supervisor and less from the Composer might have been all this movie needed to join the Cohen's masterpiece on the cult classic shelf. Check that red band trailer again. That's how the movie should have felt. Last edited by J6P; 01-09-2009 at 10:53 PM. Reason: clarity |

I laughed my ass off watching this movie in the theater. I can understand why people might not like it, but to me it's damn great. It's got an unpolished feel unlike the other movies, but it's also a bit more unpredictable, in that it doesn't just surprise you at what they can do in the context of a comedy, but it is genre-defying, and the hilarity is in the execution.
