children of men was nowhere near as good as the matrix. no matter how good an actor clive owen is nothing changes the fact that children of men was boring and utterly depressing. too depressing for its own good.

i did. the only real hope you see it right at the end of the movie. the whole thing just really bums one out though. i don't mind a good thoughtful and intelligent movie, but i don't like leaving a theater feeling more miserable than when i came in. i got enough to feel miserable about without a movie making it worse. children of men is one of those movies where you have to watch some stupid comedy immediately after to balance things out.

Sunshine is one of my favorite films, easily. I heard all the negative talk before how the ending was terrible. I remember watching it and kept waiting for something Godawful to happen... and nothing.

I loved it, but I can see why it's not on the list.

I didn't hear anything but praise for it before seeing it. I was really interested in the beginning, with the whole "re-ignite the sun" thing, regardless of how implausible that seemed, and then learning about the first Icarus ship. But then somewhere around the time they found the Icarus, I think the movie just fell apart for me.

It probably didn't help that I'd recently rewatched 2001:ASO for the who-knows-how-many'th time, a few days before watching Sunshine.

This isn't sci-fi related, but... stay away from The Wrestler then.

How was Donnie Darko not included?

It made me think a lot more than Children of Men did.

Well, that list could have been longer. Surely there are more than 10 "Thinking man's sci-Fi movies." Oh well, I have four out of the five. That's not too bad.

So if the movie does not have the "traditional" Hollywood happy ending then you hate the movie? The Matrix is a popcorn flick at its rawest form. It doesn't compare to the realism and thought provoking style of Children of Men.

I liked the original Matrix, but it can't hold a candle to the ten films on this list.

Believe me, I'm no fan of Keanu, but it really depends what you are looking for in a sci fi film. If you want futuristic effects and a technology theme, Matrix is indeed the way to go. If you want some type of apocalyptic vision of the future in which terrorists and legit government are morally equivalent, and in which a black female is pregnant with the future of mankind, but she can only be delivered by a white male, Children of Men is for you.

Good list. I might have to give "Primer" a rental, because I have never seen it. I watch Children of Men, but I had to amny distractions...will give it another chance when it is released in Blu-ray. Soylent Green and Logan's Run should be included. BUT how in the world did they not include The Matrix?

He ranked the 1972 Solaris, not the 2002 version.

The 1972 version is generally regarded as a much better version. (On IMDB the 1972 version has an 8 where the 2002 version has a 6.2.)

If you meant that you can't stand the 1972 version, then fair enough, to each their own.

I wish all the reviewers did a list so we could compare and what not.

not a bad list, but like others I think there are some missing (logan's run, the day the earth stood still) and some I would not include (sleeper)
