I would assume there would be a few bugs in these newest players, as I doubt Pio has fully figured out their 2nd-gen chip, but if you're down for slightly "slow" 'er load times, and a few bugs, for the benefit of the outstanding features, I'm sure these players are for you.

If you're looking for a plug 'n play, family unit, look elsewhere. These players are for the dedicated BR fans.
I have both the BDP-95 and the BDP-51 and have not had any issues with either. Both have been smooth running and glitch free (I do keep the firmware updated) I feel that some people have been blowing this Pio glitch thing out of proportion.....

+2,000. This cannot be said enough. There was a pole done on AVS, and I think 10% of owners have had a problem with a glitch/bug/restart etc. That's very low, IMO, for a "new" technology.

I've been through about 200 BR movies (in-store rental, monthly BB) and have had about 15 freeze at beginning, and run fine after restart. All-in-all, a lovely player.

Hmmm...I've had the PS3 for over 2 years now and NEVER had a movie freeze on me. And whats interesting is that is was the first blu-ray player around

Still looking for the perfect standalone BD player under $500.

If you are happy with your BRP, so am I. I don't mind resetting my player to enjoy a few features you don't have.

I think Pio knows it's players aren't for the "normal" BR fans. Pio is for the hadcore/extreme BR fans.

I am new to the blu-ray world as we finally got one for Christmas. I was big into the HD DVD format, and that obviously did not last long. I waited and researched for over a year before buying the Panny 35 as it seems to have had the fewest issues with playback. My biggest concern with blu-ray was all the problems I read on this forum about discs not playing, or this disc freezing 10 minutes into the movie. I never even would've thought about load times as being problematic or an issue. I hit the harmony 880 on the remote and then go make some popcorn, get the candy ready, and then the player is ready to go. Throw in a movie, get a blanket, dim the lights, more salt on the popcorn & before you know it the movie is ready to go.

I just never have understood the big deal with load times. If you hit the power button as you start the stopwatch, then run to the computer to logon to bluray.com to boast how the PS3 is 2 or 10 or even 90 seconds faster than a standalone player, you have too much time on your hands in my opinion.
I'm with you and MoPe on this one. My wife and I always take a bit of time to settle in and be ready for a movie so who notices load time? Gettin' the hot chocolate goin', microwaving the popcorn, scoopin' the ice cream, smoothing the quilt....what load time?

I understand, although it is a little ironic that the Ultimate of blu-ray fans have to endure those flaws while the normal fans don't

Because those type of features require a bit more R&D. They spend a lot of time and money to achieve those features and not the same amount of time on the firmware. No biggie IMO.

I've always been a big Pioneer fan and think they build a fantastic product, but am surprised they don't have anything between the $600 23FD and the $2K 09FD like an 07FD. Not sure what wlse they could put into this puppy's but notice the specs don't mention anything about what DAC's are in the players. The 51FD and the 05FD both had the Wolfson's, which sound fantastic.

Still watch a lot of SD or own a lot of SD go with Oppo. I`m not sure what DAC`s are used in either new players, so I can`t comment on either sound wise.

+1. I've never had an issue with a BD freezing or bugging out on me, and I have a launch PS3. It's a fast loading player, but that doesn't mean much to me. More importantly, it's rock solid, stable, and dependable.

The new pioneers do look good though. I wonder how they'll compare spinning music discs to the upcoming Oppo. Will the new Oppo still bitstream SACDs? That would probably be the deciding factor for me in a standalone player.

If SACD is important, get the Oppo. The playback on the fully updated (1.21) 51FD's is comparable/equal to $1,200 standalone performance CDP's. Just thought I'd bring it up.

It looks like a decent player, but I think I'll wait for the Oppo for now. Home Theater Mag's review of the BDP 51-FD was a bit mixed.

Because they weren't using the most current FW. FW for the Pio makes a huge difference...trust me.

Will the BDP-23FD bitstream all the advanced audio as well? I want my receiver to do the decoding.
