I just finished watching the Dr No blu ray and 3 times during the film the screen would do this odd freezing or skipping motion. I would like to know if anyone else experienced the same thing with their copy of this movie, or if you think my disc is defective. The review on high def digest mentioned "film grain freezing as a result of being affected by DNR" in several scenes, so I'm wondering if this is what I saw?

I noticed it on Dr. No and at least one of the other Bond films. At the time I thought it might have been a software glitch but the jump cut explanation makes a lot more sense. It could have been (as the poster implied) from the movie's original editing or perhaps even introduced during the movie's restoration. Either way, it didn't bother me much. The movies look fantastic...they belie their age.

I read the description for what a jump cut is here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_cut. However, why would they have this type of cut in a single scene?
The scene I noticed this in is when Bond is near the bookshelf at Strangeway's. I think he picks up something, looks towards the door and all of sudden there is a slight glitch as if half a second of film was missing, before the same scene plays out. Why would a jump cut be made here? |

I found the following at http://www.shatterhand007.com/PeterH...ntArticle.html...

Maybe Emmy600 can provide the time of the cut, so others can compare it on their systems, as I don't currently have access to my projector. Last edited by cipher; 01-12-2009 at 08:59 PM. |

I noticed it a total of 3 times during Dr. No. I will try and rewatch it tomorrow and post the times of the 3 scenes. The most obvious one was during the strangeway's office scene - the other 2 times you could almost miss if you weren't paying attention, but I have OCD when it comes to my blurays so of course i noticed them

the films are old and there were a lot more unavoidable problems back then than there are now
this is probably exactly how it was on the master film. I am happy they didn't do any extensive editing to make the entire film more comparable to todays action movies because the Bond films have their own styles which I think should be preserved as much as possible for example, in action scenes it may look like you are fast-forwarding, they slowed the film down so they could perform the sequence easily and still make it look like it happened fast. This happens in almost all of the earlier bond films, i was watching The World is Not Enough last night and noticed it there too and that was from 1999! |

I finally had time to rewatch the movie and record the times of the "jump cuts" or whatever they are. I had originally said I saw 3 such instances in the film, but just realized that one instance was just the flash of a camera. So the times of the remaining 2 instances are below:
4:56 - Strangeway's secretary gets shot 24:14 - Bond picks up a framed picture in Strangeway's office |

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. Just saw this film and I didn't notice any of the weird cuts.
However, now that I went back to the specific scene, I do see it, when he picks up a photo and then looks towards the door. I think this not a stylistic "jump cut" nor is it necessarily bad editing. Well, it's not great editing either but certainly nothing to do with the time period as there have been movies with great editing many decades before that. It seems most likely that the editor moved from one take to another take or tried to hide something that was off about a single take. And they (probably correctly) guessed that most people wouldn't notice that jump - I watched with 2 other people and none of us noticed. Depends on where your eyes are looking, you might not notice. This is something I can't unsee now, though. |
