Question James Bond - Dr No Blu ray Question

I just finished watching the Dr No blu ray and 3 times during the film the screen would do this odd freezing or skipping motion. I would like to know if anyone else experienced the same thing with their copy of this movie, or if you think my disc is defective. The review on high def digest mentioned "film grain freezing as a result of being affected by DNR" in several scenes, so I'm wondering if this is what I saw?

there are some jump cuts in the editing of that film because of the lack of technology back then, thats probably all it is, i know in my copy i distinctivley remember 1 such instance and with my lack of attention span it probably happened multipule times that i missed

Thanks for the reply. Was the distinctive jumpcut you refer to in the scene where Bond is investigating Strangeway's place?

Emmy660, I was going to post this exact issue when I watching the first bit of this movie on the weekend. When Bond is in Strangeway's place, near the wall, there seems to be slight jump in the scene. Almost as if some frames were missing. I didn't watch past this point but I'd be interested in knowing how many scenes you noticed like this?

Also, I'm watching on a PS3 with the latest firmware.

I didn't notice this on Dr. No but it did happen at least 3 times in From Russia With Love. I didn't worry about it.

I noticed it on Dr. No and at least one of the other Bond films. At the time I thought it might have been a software glitch but the jump cut explanation makes a lot more sense. It could have been (as the poster implied) from the movie's original editing or perhaps even introduced during the movie's restoration. Either way, it didn't bother me much. The movies look fantastic...they belie their age.

I read the description for what a jump cut is here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_cut. However, why would they have this type of cut in a single scene?

The scene I noticed this in is when Bond is near the bookshelf at Strangeway's. I think he picks up something, looks towards the door and all of sudden there is a slight glitch as if half a second of film was missing, before the same scene plays out. Why would a jump cut be made here?

I found the following at http://www.shatterhand007.com/PeterH...ntArticle.html...

Quote:
Another editing technique Hunt used throughout the early Bonds is a "jump cut." This is a stylistic effect that can be used to cut across the camera axis or cutting in the middle of pans and zooms, or a technique that removes several frames of film and causes the action to jump. In the fight scene between Bond and Jacques Boitier in Thunderball, Peter Hunt created the illusion of a violent hit when Boitier has Bond pinned against the door. He clipped out at least two or three frames to get this effect. To some viewers, it looks as if the theater projector ate some of the film in the last showing, but to the film industry it was an art form. The first jump cut was used in Dr. No when Strangeways' secretary, Miss Trueblood, is shot by one of the Three Blind Mice. This technique would later be used by film editor John Glen in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.
While these instances seem like stylistic editing decisions, the scene I and Emmy600 are referring would not seem to make sense for this type of edit.

Maybe Emmy600 can provide the time of the cut, so others can compare it on their systems, as I don't currently have access to my projector.

I don't know why they did it but that's just how the movie is cut. they also use fast motion from time to time. I guess it works for whatever they were trying to do, make the battles seem faster or something.

I noticed it a total of 3 times during Dr. No. I will try and rewatch it tomorrow and post the times of the 3 scenes. The most obvious one was during the strangeway's office scene - the other 2 times you could almost miss if you weren't paying attention, but I have OCD when it comes to my blurays so of course i noticed them

the films are old and there were a lot more unavoidable problems back then than there are now

this is probably exactly how it was on the master film.

I am happy they didn't do any extensive editing to make the entire film more comparable to todays action movies because the Bond films have their own styles which I think should be preserved as much as possible

for example, in action scenes it may look like you are fast-forwarding, they slowed the film down so they could perform the sequence easily and still make it look like it happened fast.

This happens in almost all of the earlier bond films, i was watching The World is Not Enough last night and noticed it there too and that was from 1999!

I finally had time to rewatch the movie and record the times of the "jump cuts" or whatever they are. I had originally said I saw 3 such instances in the film, but just realized that one instance was just the flash of a camera. So the times of the remaining 2 instances are below:

4:56 - Strangeway's secretary gets shot

24:14 - Bond picks up a framed picture in Strangeway's office

I noticed it the first time I watched it on Blu-ray. To me, it's just bad editing.

Actually, it has nothing to do with the age of the movie or when it was made. I still see it in some modern movies. It's bad editing, nothing more. It's more common than people would think.

im just saying they didn't care too much about leaving it in a movie back then because its something that people would think just happens and couldn't be avoided

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. Just saw this film and I didn't notice any of the weird cuts.

However, now that I went back to the specific scene, I do see it, when he picks up a photo and then looks towards the door. I think this not a stylistic "jump cut" nor is it necessarily bad editing. Well, it's not great editing either but certainly nothing to do with the time period as there have been movies with great editing many decades before that.

It seems most likely that the editor moved from one take to another take or tried to hide something that was off about a single take. And they (probably correctly) guessed that most people wouldn't notice that jump - I watched with 2 other people and none of us noticed. Depends on where your eyes are looking, you might not notice.

This is something I can't unsee now, though.
