The old one S1 4K Ultra HD messed up just like Stranger Things S1 4K Ultra HD or what? Sorry, I haven't bought Westworld S1 physical media just yet

I don't know if it is "messed up" but it is incredibly underwhelming, especially for a show produced on film. I did A/B comparisons between the UHD and BD and I actually found the Blu-ray as good, if not better.

The 4K set is only $5 more than the BD right now. It has a metal case and an exclusive booklet that doesn't come with the Blu-ray (as far as I know). If you like packaging, the extra $5 might be worth it.

To be fair, I do want to add that while I have a LG OLED capable of Dolby Vision, I don't have a Dolby Vision player right now. Perhaps that might make a difference?

It's the weird use of DNR that makes the Season 1 release less than first rate. The Dolby Atmos mix is unique in its placement of music, though you need speakers that are outside of the standard 5.1 or 7.1 base Atmos layout to know what I'm talking about. Front Wides, for one.

HBO has no 4k mastering requirement like Amazon and Netflix, and if WW is still shot on film then they'll continue to make the excuse that 4k scanning doesn't make it look good. I don't know what the Nolans smoke, but it isn't good.

Note in Dolby Vision it looks better than the regular blu-ray. Perhaps not by a wide margin, but still recommended. As said it would be nice if season 2 did 4k DI. I haven't heard anyone say if it is 2k or 4k DI.

The first season was 2K instead of 4K because they didn't have the time to make the grain play nice with the HDR. I too wonder if they're making the second season with 4K in mind, though I doubt they have more time this go around.

Man, I hope this is better than the Season One 4K set. S1 DID NOT impress me. It looked like they took what was on the regular blu and just slapped it on a 4K disc.

I mostly feel the same way. I go back and forth between the two a lot.

What about the Atmos upgrade? Worth it for that if you have 7.x.4?

If you have Front Wides using a Denon or Marantz 7.1.4 processor from 2015 or their new 2018 9.1.4 flagship models, or Acurus, or a Trinnov Altitude with multiple speaker locations, the music score comes out of the Front Wides, Tops, and Surrounds. The only music that comes out of the front three channels is the player piano. There are also sound effects that get steered to the FW and Side Surround 1 locations in the Dolby Atmos speaker rendering table.

If you don't have the ability to have those extra special speaker locations beyond the 7.1 lower speaker base, then the track sounds fairly normal with only spot overhead effects.
