Default Blu-ray Trends: Is 3D Blu-ray mostly dead in America?

My 3D TV, a Panasonic plasma, died at the end of 2017. When I looked at Best Buy to replace it, I couldn't find a new model that had 3D.

I also noticed that there were only 4 recent movies released on 3D Blu-ray this year.

What happened? Did 4K replace 3D?

With an even dozen titles in the pipeline for restoration - keeping us busy until 2021 - I can only say IF 3-D is dead on Blu-ray, it's a very lively corpse!

I don't know about 3D movies in America, but I can tell you what's dead on blu-ray.com.

Common courtesy.

That's encouraging. However, how do you bring new people into the format when the display equipment is unavailable or prohibitively expensive? I would like to continue supporting the format, Bob, but I can't find an affordable new TV that plays 3D.

You’ll likely find a dedicated thread in the 3D forum, Jar Jar (using a tablet device currently). 3D is very much dead in US, however the UK still releases 3D titles that are easily available to import.

As far as I know all 3D TV sets in NA stopped after the 2016 season. Most of the great LG OLED sets are sold out at any of the bigger retail sites and getting hard to find even at some of the smaller sites, the Sony Z9 seems to still be available

Lots of very good 3D (and some True 4K + 3D) Projectors and maybe even improving projectors
As always, thank you, hariseldon! A projector sounds like a good solution!

Not dead, but it seems companies have deemed it unprofitable in the US, and have ceased production (for now). Also, more and more 3D blu-rays are not getting a US release.

That being said, they’re still available for purchase (used) and 3D Blu-rays can be imported. Perhaps, as some have suggested, newer technology (sans glasses) will bring 3D back to the US.

It's not totally dead, but the fact you can't even buy a TV with 3D in the U.S. right now pretty much put it on it's deathbed. At some point even the slow trickle of releases are likely to stop. I really wish I had one of the 3D OLED models, I had my eye on them the minute i saw the reviews, but they were just way out of my price range back in 2015-2016.

Such a shame because i had a small collection of 3D blu-ray that I may never get to watch. I was hoping they would listen and bring back at least a couple of models this year. Unless they do that for the 2019 models, it will probably be too late as I'm leaning towards 65" OLED purchase at some point now that the prices are getting more reasonable for OLED (65" hasn't dropped as quickly as 55", but it'll get there).

Do we seriously need another one of these threads? It's not even posted in the right part of the site.

The answer is no. Moving on.

I picked up a 2016 55" 4k HDR 3D Sony Bravia from Amaon a month ago that cost me $830. Stellar TV for my viewing environment. Great price, outstanding set. The TVs are out there, just gotta do the work.

This was my situation as well, I wanted to upgrade my TV and get into 4K but the only new 4K/3D (or only 3D) TV's available are the flagship Sony Z9D series starting at $3500 for the 65" (and those models are actually a couple of years old as well). I was heavily considering it, but ultimately opted to go with the #2 Sony 930E and upgraded my receiver at the same time for almost the same price. This relegated my old 3D TV out of the theater room to the upstairs living room with no surround system, so that pretty much will kill it for me. It was cool while it lasted.

Big studios intentionally killed 3d in favor of 4k.

I suspect that we will see 4k Holographic 3d down the road (glasses free 3d) so by killing off the format it makes the new one much easier to sell. Can't say it doesn't look any better than the old 3d when it's not available for comparison.

That being said, where 3d is by far most effective - big screen DLP front projection - the hardware support is still plentiful. Once you see a 3d disc on a big screen dlp it's hard to go back.

For discs there is almost always a region free international version.

Yes, projection tv will be the lifesaver of people who like 3d as it exists now, glasses and all but with true immersion and outside of the screen viewing. And of course there are over 700 3d blu ray discs out there so there is plenty of stuff to look at forever.

And when glasses free 3d gets here it will be just a natural progression that will be naturally accepted, 4k the temporary stepping stone to 8k glasses free 3d. And as nearly no one will remember the old 3d with true immersion and objects outside the screen I believe 8k glasses free 3d will be a true permanent feature of tvs. It will never be what 3d is now, but for the masses they will be very happy with it as they can just turn on the tv and enjoy the depth of a picture, which I admit will be cool. Not true 3d but close.

I know you are saying I just bought a 4k tv. I know. But yes you will buy the new 8k 3d tv too. I know I will. They have us figured out.
