United Kingdom 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days (Artificial Eye) - Wrong aspect ratio

I didn't expect this to happen from Artificial Eye. They present the film in 1.85:1 which is NOT the original aspect ratio (2.39:1). How could this happen???

Otherwise no complaints, especially the extra features are great.

Some of the DVDs for the film were the same, but I believe they were open matte rather than cropped. I wonder if that’s what they have done here (not really acceptable either way but open matte is a little more acceptable than cropped).

Mine has already been shipped. Anyway, when I receive it I can do an comparison with the DVD. If it's open-matte I don't really mind that much but if it's cropped it's going back!

I emailed Curzon and asked if there was an error.

Major disappointment.

I don't care if it's open matte instead of cropped when it's not the intended OAR.

Thankfully, I've never pre-ordered anything from AE, which is a company I otherwise admire for having a great foreign-language catalogue.

not very helpful...

Hi Rolf

Thank you for your email.

I am sorry to hear you are dissatisfied with the Blue Ray.
Unfortunately, this is not something we can help you with, you will need to go back to your point of purchase and discuss this with them, and hopefully they can resolve this for you.

Kind regards
Jane

I'm afraid the person who replied didn't even begin to understand what the problem was.

Yeah, that's what I thought... but then I don't think there was any kind of technical error here anyway... they just used the wrong master as there were 1.85:1 versions out there before as nitin mentioned here.

Thanks for the heads up, I was going to pick it up over the weekend but HMV had no stock in, looks like I’ve dodged a bullet.

Just checked my old AE DVD out of curiosity & it is in 2.39:1.
I'll stick with my dvd unless they sort the issue out.

Yes AE was one of the few DVD releases in the correct OAR!

I wonder if this current master in the wrong OAR is why Criterion didn’t release it together with Beyond the Hills and Graduation? We know they have the license.

Thankfully I was wrong and mine hadn't shipped and I was able to cancel it.

Wrong AR didn't stop them from presenting The Last Emperor

Well yes but in that case, that was to get the ‘precious’ Cinematographer approved sticker

The same goes for AE's Me And You. To my knowledge, 2.35:1 is the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film, but the BD is presented in 1.85:1(maybe open matte?) instead.

Yes, this is addressed briefly in the site review for Me and You. It was apparently reframed by Bertolucci himself.

Turns out that the US Criterion release (Jan 22nd 2019) IS ALSO in the wrong aspect ratio. AR of their BD release is 1.78:1.

The Criterion screenshots on this site appear correct, along with DVDBeaver confirming them for aspect ratio.
