Default SPLIT SECOND (Tony Maylam, 1992) - from MVD Rewind Collection 2018

From my Cinema Arcana FB Page:

“He’s seen the future. Now he has to kill it!” Tony Maylam’s action /sci-fi / horror romp SPLIT SECOND (1992) finally makes its way to domestic Blu later this year, courtesy of the MVD Rewind Collection! In the way off year of 2008, cantankerous detective Rutger Hauer and fresh-faced rookie Neil Duncan find themselves hot on the trail of a heart-munching serial killer – the same one who ripped open Hauer’s original partner years earlier. As they slosh through a partially-submerged cyberpunk London looking for clues, they come to suspect this murderer may not exactly be from our world.

Promoted by Fangoria during production, SPLIT SECOND didn’t gain much traction until its VHS release and cable play, where those who bothered to watch found a fun, action-filled genre programmer with some laughs, some splat and plenty of things blowing up. And sometimes that’s really all you want. Issued on DVD by HBO in the early 2000s, the disc went out of print and fans have had to resort to overseas options for their viewing pleasure. Thankfully MVD are here to give the film its belated Stateside HD debut, and while the disc itself is still a little ways off—production of bonus features is just now being looked into—it sounds like we’ll hopefully see it by year’s end.

And just in case you thought that’s the only sci-fi actioner MVD has up their sleeve, the company has also confirmed their acquisition of Albert Pyun’s NEMESIS (1992) and its sequels! Watch this space for details.

I need to see screencaps of the disc before I double dip.

Hopefully it'll also have more substantial bonus features than the UK disc too.

Not familiar with MVD. Do they usually provide subtitles? If so I’ll definitely get this.

Neither the UK 101 Films nor the German (Krekel'd) Platinum Cult Edition were particularly good looking releases (the latter one even worse) and I fear they've got their hands on the same source material so set your expectations accordingly.

I’ve got the Mediabook from 84 films. That has been my go to of the releases. Plus it’s got the Japanese cut of the film. Not much difference and it’s in SD. But I like multiple cuts. Unfortunately it’s only lossy audio. But, the picture is a bit better in my opinion than the others.

Could be tempted to double dip if the extras are good. Otherwise I’ll just stick with the 101 edition.

The only negative about this film was the annoying sidekick. Otherwise, a solid sci-fi actioner.

Also, that the tone changes and it becomes kind of a Scooby Doo like romp. It also has a direct to video look, like too well lit, in supposedly dark scenes. Maybe a new transfer will correct this? Unless, it's how it was shot?

The creature is awesome, you don't see it much. And it's killed waaaaaay too easily.

And the subplot about the creature is glossed over too much.

MVD is pretty much just rehashing all the existing stuff from UK 101 and Platinum Cult. They are just making it now available in the US instead of importing. Though importing is usually actually cheaper than what they charge so they're kind of pointless in my eyes.
