Before the list function here broke, I proudly displayed Altered States in my All-time Top 20 list. Can't wait to see the Criterion release.

Yes it is and Sony too for besides Universal/Corman/ITC/Fox for Shout Factory and Criterion and i had this movie as a CE on my Scream Factory wishlist yet now Criterion is making my dreams come true for a CE.

Who thinks the movie is quite Cronenbergian?

In 1980, the studio screened a preview of Altered States at Cinema 21 in San Diego, CA. It had not yet been finalized. It was longer than the version that was released, with several important dramatic scenes that made Dr. Jessup's "change" more gradual. His wife was having an affair, too. They argue about it. It had more explicit nudity and longer sex scenes. As I recall it also put the crucifix into more provocative imagery. I couldn't wait to see it again, and I remember thinking the released version had been thoroughly pruned, as in stridently edited. Whew! That was a long time ago. I'd love to see the preview again. I think it was a better film, but I love the film that came out in any case.

A Criterion edition is good news.

I see "WB" & "Criterion" in the same sentence, and my first thought is The Fountain.

Please, please, please...

Very cool! I wasn't sure this was happening since it wasn't included in today's announcements, but I'd almost certainly double-dip for this one.

Yep. Might be a good idea to take this as speculation. Many of the old phantom links before the site re-design never came to fruition.

Also, the Altered States URL is now dead.

Large supporter of the company here, but they do periodically release things that are not in line with the mission statement.

Not sure if this one is legit or not either.

The fact that WB gave permission to the BFI to release The Devils on dvd, and dvd only tells me that it's not going to happen.

Still, I dream of a release too.

It can't be the film's (The Devils) content that would be holding it back; turn on the news, or practically any movie or television program today for what is apparently now acceptable. The idea would not only be hypocritical, but utterly without merit.

Oh I agree. The idea was ridiculous when that beautiful 2 dvd set came out from the BFI

Yeah, but in the U.S. that moral high ground is held steadfastly in a cherry-picking manner.

Cool story. Another mysterious cut to add to the list of lost treasures.
Goat Christ is one of my favourite images from the film.

Tiny Furniture, Armageddon, Bull Durham, The Breakfast Club & you're questioning whether or not Altered States is a good fit for Criterion. very
