Default Toho Godzilla Cinematic Universe Coming 2021

Source:Godzilla-Movies

Quote:

Japanese publication Nikkei Style released an interview with Keiji Ota--Toho's Chief Godzilla Officer over Goji-kon, or the Godzilla Strategy Council launched in October 2014. The council was created to help decide where to take the future of the Godzilla franchise.

"...after 2021, we're thinking of a potential strategy that [releases] Godzilla movies uninterrupted at a rate of every 2 years, although there is a preference for a yearly pace as well." said Ota. He continued, hoping to expand Toho's Godzilla franchise into a cinematic universe, inspired by Marvel."

"The future of the series and its forwarding developments are very conscious of the method of "shared universe". Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, etc. could all share a single world view much like a Marvel movie where Iron Man and the Hulk can crossover with each other."

"It is said that each movie can be a possible film production where any one of them could lead a film of their own as the titular character."

Toho Godzilla universe will not include 2016's smash hit and Japanese Academy Award winning, Shin Godzilla.

"Shin Godzilla was a huge hit, but instead of thinking of doing the obvious idea of making a Shin Godzilla 2, instead think about a world that can be used for a long time, I'd rather make a World of Godzilla."

Toho seems completely dedicated to expanding the Godzilla franchise after 2020, with the tentative plan of a new film every two years and a fresh "World of Godzilla"

I thought Godzilla was already a cinematic universe for decades.

Same. Aren't the recent Godzilla and Kong movies leading up to Godzilla vs Kong? Seems like a cinematic universe to me.

So, when will Godzilla get his Infinity Gauntlet? I also need him to do witty quips, and he needs to team up with Mecha Godzilla who would be the Bucky to Cap Godzilla. Give them the same origin story, trapped in ice underground for way too long.

Those are Legendary Pictures though, this would be Toho so separate.

Yep, that's more or less what it's always been. You even had monsters like Rodan and Mothra be introduced in their own solo movies before making their way into the Godzilla series.

Then you also have the currently ongoing MonsterVerse in the US. So none of this is new to the franchise at all; Toho are just talking up that aspect of it now because cinematic universes are popular at the moment.

I may sound negative here, but that isn't my intention. I'm always up for more Godzilla, and am excited to live in a time where the character/franchise is at its most prolific and successful since the '60s!

Are we gonna have Godzilla Avengers? That'd be something to see. Multiple variations of Godzilla teaming up to fight a monster.

It'd be more like Godzilla teaming up with several other monsters to take down a big bad, and well... we had that 50 years ago, it was called Destroy All Monsters:

Erm what do you mean TOHO? You've had all your monsters crossing over since the 60's. Destroy all Monsters, Godzilla Final Wars etc

Anyway sarcasm aside new Godzilla films are always welcome so bring em on.

Talking Love me some Japanese kaiju!

In the fifties and sixties, Toho did this all the time. They made stand-alone monster movies like Rodan and Mothra, and those creatures went on to appear in the Godzilla series. Also, critters like Manda (from Atragon) and Baragon (from Frankenstein Conquers the World) eventually crossed over. Continuity was always a bit loose, but it effectively gave the impression that 1950s - 1970s Japan was a wonderland of monsters.

Some of that was lost from the Heisei series on, when they made Godzilla movies almost exclusively. So I hope they get back to making all kinds of monster movies. Not a Godzilla-verse, but a kaiju-verse.

And hopefully get a single American partner to release them all over here. Maybe WB, Sony, or Funimation?

Even if you’re just following the Honda movies it’s already one of the most coherent sci fi and prolific sequel franchises.
