Default Board Games. You play them?

My wife and I have taken an interest in Scrabble recently. Not like crazy into it but I think it's one of those games that is more fun when you aren't too competitive.

I'm going to be buying Risk soon but as far as strategy games go I love Diplomacy. I have a set somewhere but no one wants to play. I learned it in high school since out world history teacher figured it was the best way for us to learn WWI.

I have since banned myself from Monopoly. I played a game recently with my wife, her brother, and their niece and they all ended up ganging up on me and I still bankrupted them.

So what do you play?

we own a hallway closet full of board games but I've mainly been playing scrabble with my wife for years. not a fan of monopoly. We also play the old school classics Connect 4 and Pente.

tip: if you are playing with other couples who are in a slightly volatile relationship then avoid playing Pictionary, it's the top breaker upper I've seen

love scrabble and risk. The big expensive deluxe version of scrabble with the hard plastic spinning board and the edges that hold the tiles in place rocks! Trivial pursuit was fun way back in the day...some of the movie scene it's are pretty sweet as well, although they are barely a board game. Chess is always a winner!

we have several versions of trivial pursuit and I always claim that my wife is reading my mind when she gets an answer that surprises me. she finds it insulting

My wife and I played a game of Trivial Pursuit early on in our relationship with her brother and his fiancee that ended in some bitterness. Fortunately we survived it but I would second this and expand it to any competitive game might not be a good idea for new or volatile relationships. Now though we love Cranium, Upwords, and she loves Monopoly and chess. That is because she kicks my butt. We also both like Pitch and Hearts.

Was a Scrabble junkie for a long time. Played on Yahoo's version called "Literati" all the time. Finally stopped when I realize, please don't take offense but, people are pretty stupid. I started playing to many matches where I was being accused of cheating because I could form large words that I would consider to be everyday words and having to defend myself. We're not talking like "Curpuscular" but like "Certificate"...yeah to many letters for scrabble but, trying to make a point.

Now it's Mah Jongg, love to play but Yahoo people are way to serious and boot you for taking like 10 seconds to think.

I love to play games, but I'm in the minority. I do play Heroscape, when people are over we play Cranium, Apples To Apples, Sequence, Balderdash, recently picked up Pictionary Man...Also, have tried various versions of Risk and Clue. Would love to play more Heroscape but, finding willing participants is a bit tough.

I got my wife hooked on Ticket to Ride . . .
Apples to apples is fun . . . Blokus too
I suggest to anyone wanting to branch out past the usual suspects investigate the Board Game Geek website/community . . .

I don't play monopoly. As an economics major I feel it is crucial to avoid and discourage such a negative impact such as a monopoly into todays market.

Seriously though, I play monopoly all the time. Always win.
