Default Sony BDP-S6700

Anybody know if this is region free before I go to import something that's A?

Also how can I make it play all DVDs? Some of my DVDs only work in my TV (American and UK)

Without knowing where you are it is sometimes difficult to give a helpful answer.

However, I can say that the Sony S6700 is definitely not region or zone free out-of-the-box. That applies whether you are here in North America (I'm in Canada) where we are locked into Region 1 and Zone A, or Europe where players are normally locked into Region 2, Zone B. The only exception to this is that there have been reports that in Australia some players are shipped region-free.

There are some businesses that obtain players made by many companies including Sony and modify them to be both region and zone free as well as dual 110-220 volt power. The potential disadvantage here is that this modification normally voids the manufacturer's warranty.

A newer idea and possibly even cost effective is to buy a player in your home country and import one from the other area of interest. Since modified players can cost even more than double the original sale prices having two players is well worth considering.

Sorry to thread bump this one, but I am not a very tech savvy blu ray enthusiast and I am looking for a player that will play Region B blu rays that is wifi capable and has 3D and upscaling, I did some research and for the price this seemed like the best option, now reading this I am truly confused ... Is this model capable of playing (primarily UK/Euro) region B dics or isnt it ??? If it's region free as all of the specs that I have read appear to state it is, what am I missing here ??? Thanks for any help, that those more tech savvy than I, can offer !!!

If you buy this model in a UK shop, then it will be locked for Region B, so you'll be fine for UK and European discs. However you can buy this same model on Amazon (even Amazon UK) where it is stated as being multi-region. In this instance the player will have been modified by somebody to play all regions, because as far as I'm aware, Sony region-lock their machines according to the areas they are being sold in.

I am in the US so I suppose they would be Region A locked but looking at all the reviews and product specs either I just don't "understand" what Region Free means or their specs are not accurate because I read this as a blu ray player capable of playing blu's that are Region A, B, C etc

Yes, Sony would issue Region A locked players to US stores. However there are online sites which do sell these machines as 'region-free' or 'multi-region' players, but this means that they have been altered or 'chipped' by someone in order to be able to play all discs. My understanding also is that Sony could invalidate any warranty if anything goes wrong with the player and they find it had been modified in any way.

Edit: After just re-reading your post (in bold), region free or multi-region simply means the player can play discs from all regions, A, B, and C.

Ok (and please forgive my ignorance here) so then i were to import discs that were Region B from say Indicator or Arrow that are not "locked" then they will play on this unit correct ? Conversely if I were to buy a Region B "locked" blu ray then it would not play correct ?

If the player is a Region B machine, then you can happily play Region B discs irrespective of whether they are Region B locked or not.

If it's a multi-region machine, then in theory that means it will play Region B discs exactly the same as a disc from any other region. The fact that a disc is stated as being 'Region B locked' as opposed to simply 'Region B' shouldn't make any difference. If the machine has been chipped to play Region B discs, then it will recognize them as such, irrespective of whether or not those discs are locked.

I should add that as I don't own a multi-region player myself at present, I can only offer you my understanding of how they work. Furthermore, no need to ask for forgiveness - we all need to ask questions when we're not sure about something.

I live in the UK and bought the modified version of this from Amazon recently so I can play Region A discs

The modified version plays any region DVD straight out of the box. To change the region for Blu-ray, you have to press one of the corresponding coloured buttons with the tray open. It plays Region B by default. I don't yet have any Region A discs as I'll be importing some soon, but I know they'll work OK

If you want to play UK discs then a standard UK model would be fine as you'll have a Region A player already for your US discs. You'll just need to allow for power differences as we work on a different voltage

I have a warning for fellow owners of the Sony BDPS6700. I recently noticed that my DVDs were looking pretty bad. DVDs have always looked quite good, not Bluray good but still quite good playing on the BDPS6700 and Samsung Ku6300 65 inch panel. The Sony Bluray player I had before also did a great job with DVDs.

That changed about two weeks ago after a software update. I was playing a series of Blurays that I had bought and didn't notice the change until I played a DVD. The image was so bad it was almost unwatchable. At first I thought it might just be my perception having been spoiled by the improved resolution of 1080p. But after trying even my newest DVDs, that I know looked real good before, I was sure something had changed. I played with picture settings on the player and tv, still couldn't get the great image back. Then yesterday I decided to try my old Sony Bluray player that I had given over to kids movies in the living room. I swapped it for the BDPS6700 and immediately the poor DVD images were cured. My DVDs once again look great.

I know that both Sony and Samsung have very good upscaling and the results have always been excellent. This sudden loss of image quality can only be due to a faulty software package from Sony. So please beware. My player was fine before this and basically was ruined by the update. It's a cheap player and I got years of use from it but still, it would be fine if not for the bad software. If you dont need to update, dont do it.

Oh Movieslug, this exact scenario happened to me several weeks ago. I wish you had seen my post on the thread linked above so that you could have been spared. Sony is sure to get a number of complaints. I will never connect my future players to the internet.

I just bought this model. A region free one. Did this happen when you did an update? Or connect it to WiFi? Does that make DVD picture quality go bad?

So, I just received my first Blu-Ray player. Man, it looks great! I'll just remind myself to not update s*** and to not connect it to the internet. Changing the region is extremely easy!

As someone who has owned and used more players than anyone else in the forum userbase, I can tell you that updates can change your settings to whatever is laid down in the firmware update, so it's best to do a settings reset after an update and then manually configure your settings to what you know they should be.

DVD should automatically be region free with the usual Mod.

The most common mod from 220 and Bombay (I think most of the others for that matter)

BLuray -- drawer shut/power off (not 100% sure if the disc needs to out of the player)

Press Yellow Button -- should turn on Region A
Press Blue Button -- Region B
Press Red Button -- Region C

I have the 6500 and the player doesn't need to be powered off. Just have the disc tray opened press the corresponding colored button then close the tray.

Default Sony S6700 troubleshooting intermittent video (Maltese Falcon 4K/Bluray)

Does anyone have a suggestion how to troubleshoot intermittent video on a disc, Maltese Falcon 4k/Bluray? Screen goes black for a minute.

I recently bought a Sony S6700 to replace an old Samsung BDP-1590. I went a bit crazy and bought a lot of discs, mostly $5-10. I've been doing some basic checking of discs, does the disc menu come up and can I watch a few minutes of video.

I have watched just a few movies, Rocketman on Blu-ray and Spellbound on DVD. However, while watching just a few minutes of video on Maltese Falcon Blu-ray the video went to black for about a minute then came back. I rewound and played the same section again but it was fine.

I know that could be a bad cable? It could be a bad disc? It could be the player or the TV? I'm not sure how to troubleshoot.

I've learned the hard way that I need to check as many discs as possible before the return period expires.

I bought this unit because of the cheap price and because it supports Bluetooth and LDAC. That's why I decided not to get the Panasonic UB820. I have thought about the Sony X800M2 but I see so many reports of freezing. I would mostly use it with Blu-rays as I only have a few 4K discs.

Rule out the easy things to check first:

Make sure that the suspected discs are clean and free of scratches. Note if the problem occurs at the same place each time or if it varies.

Test the affected discs on another blu-ray player, one of yours or one belonging to someone else. See if the problem is unique to your player or if it happens on other players.

Try a different HDMI cable and see what, if any, difference that makes. HDMI cables can fail.

You could also connect your blu-ray player to a different TV and see if that makes any difference.

I would be very surprised if the problem was with your TV.

Thanks for that advice, @vilvya.

I wanted to add an FYI. I have bought this from Amazon USA. I have done no hacks on it. It is able to play some old DVDs that are Region 9 that our Samsung BDP-1590 would not play. Is Region 9 “all region”?
