Universal Studios Upgrade (2018)

Quote:
Synopsis
Upgrade is a thrilling and hyper violent vision of the future from the producers of Get Out and The Purge, and the creator of Saw and Insidious. After his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Prometheus) is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure that will "upgrade" his body. The cure–an Artificial Intelligence implant called STEM–gives Grey physical abilities beyond anything experienced, and the ability to relentlessly claim vengeance against those who murdered his wife and left him for dead.

I thought this was great, and they did a surprisingly lackluster job in marketing it. I only saw the trailer once in theaters, a couple months before opening, then a bit of marketing online during release week.

The trailer sells and represents the feeling of the movie really well. A bit of a RoboCop style throwback, but still unique enough in concept. When watching this, I realized that it's a modern day "grindhouse" film, but good! Not like similar recent movies that are supposed to harken back to that era but wear their badness on their sleeve like a nervous grinning apology.

It's a smart, well-written, well-directed, and entertaining movie that seemed to be swept under the rug for whatever reason. Better than what Eli Roth's Death Wish seems to be (I haven't seen that though). Also eerily similar in concept - judging only by the trailers for both films - to the new Venom movie that looks so bland.

Yeah the Venom thing is especially pronounced because the star of this looks like Tom Hardy.

Anyway, I agree. This was a nice guilty pleasure throwback to ultra-violent 80s sci fi action movies. I went to see it at the local Alamo Drafthouse and the pre-show was all vintage trailers like the Van Damme Cyborg and Keanu Reeves in Johnny Mnemonic.

I'm not sure I'm going to pick up this on blu ray but it should look really good. Maybe on 4k if it gets a release, because I think the lighting in this will look great in HDR.

I agree about the marketing I didn't know that this film was coming out till two weeks prior to its release when they started showing trailers. It's a really enjoyable sci-fi movie, wish they would have done more of those hand to hand combat scenes because they were done really well. The AI voice sounded like Hal from 2001: A space Odyssey which was kind of cool, I wonder if that was a homage. Didn't care much for the twist ending, I wanted a different outcome. I can see this being a TV series later on. I would pre-order if it was 4K, I'll just wait for the price to go down on the regular bluray.

Day 1 purchase. This movie is the surprise hit of the year for me. Yeah, I know the year isn't over but I don't expect much else coming out to do what this film did for me. Was expecting to walk out of the theater thinking, " eh, that was alright" but ended up loving it.

This was a nice surprise. I heard nothing about this before it hit my theater, but I gave it a shot, and found myself really enjoying it. It's amazing what they were able to accomplish with less than $5 million. This movie really felt like a $50m picture. Will probably pick this up, maybe on Black Friday or something. I hope they keep that cover. It looks terrific.

I could've sworn the main actor was Tom Hardy. The entire time I wondered if I had missed his name when I checked IMDb.

Same here. I've already seen it twelve times, and I'm going again when it hits the second-run theater July 6th. The only other movie I've seen that many times in theaters was the original Star Wars, and that was from multiple re-releases spread over two decades.
Completely obsessed with Upgrade.

Probably not as none of the other Blumhouse tilt titles have one.

Though if there is I suspect it would be digital only a la Truth or Dare

It's my #1 movie of the year. So happy that I was able to catch it during its short theater run.
