Default Tough Old Guys.. in film.

Who do think was the coolest or gave off the baddest screen persona pre -1980.

Have to go with; James Cagney.

Clint "The man with no name" Eastwood!
All he had to do was arrive in town on a horse and the townsfolk all hid, for his reputation preceded his arrival.

Erroyl Flynn, Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin. McQueen and Eastwood as previously posted are great choices too.

Let's not forget Charles Bronson. The Death Wish movies are some of my favorite guilty pleasures.

EDIT: fletchlives beat me to it. So, I guess this is a +1.

I think that you could add Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, Richard Widmark, and Sean Connery to this list.

Definitely Charles Bronson....unlike some of the others mentioned, this guy was a physical specimen as well...imposing with both fists and a gun....

Very good lists. I would add Brando and James Dean. And the Duke of course.
