Blu-ray Count

![]() ![]() https://www.amazon.de/Licht-dunkler-...dp/B07C5P8QDM/ First BD release for this title anywhere in the world. It's one of my greatest guilty pleasures. I know it swept the Golden Raspberry Awards that year, but I can't fathom how, it's an epic old-fashioned romantic spy thriller, with a gorgeous Michael Kamen score and beautiful period locations in England, Austria and throughout the former East Germany -- the film was shot in the fall of 1990, as the country was in the process of reunifying. My disc arrived today.
The good: - region-free - gorgeous recent HD transfer, even for the trailer - no problematic PAL material The bad: - there are English subs available for the entire film, but the burned-in English subs for the scattered German bits were not retained. Honestly though, this isn't a huge issue. There are maybe a dozen minor exchanges and bits of onscreen text in German that had burned-in subs, until one of the final scenes, which is entirely in German. However that scene revolves around Michael Douglas's character not speaking a word of German, so it almost works better without the subs. I suspect anyone seeing it that way will get it completely, you don't need to understand anything that's spoken to follow the scene. That said, I understand German, and have also seen the film 1000x, haha, so it's easier for me. Still, I can highly recommend this disc, with just the one tiny caveat of the subs. Bonus features consist of - final US trailer - 4 min English-language featurette - 1 min set interviews with Douglas, Griffith and Seltzer and 30 second set interviews with Neeson, Gielgud and Richardson - 1 min 30 sec gallery of lobbycards Last edited by James Luckard; 08-07-2018 at 05:43 PM. |

Its a throwback to those spy thrillers that were being made during and after WWII Its escapsim Its been probably 20+ years since Ive seen it... want to see it again soon. I keep thinking this would be a good title for Twilight Time to licence maybe? Also liked the Michael Kamen score |
