Great film. Don’t know if I’d sit through it again, though.

Love this film immensely. Looking forward to a 4K release to stuff in my kimchi lent. This hasn't even seen a Blu release in the US.

Would be great to see how it compares to the UK DigiBook. Excellent movie, anyhow.

Hopefully Studio Canal will not use that version. Universum Film first had the rights in Germany. I have sent StudioCanal an e-mail on the "remaster".

Do keep us updated what they reply to you My biggest concern with this new remaster though would be the lack of English subs for German dialogues...

It is in the works. In a reply the company confirmed HDR as well.

I wouldn't move so soon. This could very easily not be English-friendly.

His last film, An Officer and a Spy, never found distribution in a single English-speaking territory. The film is entirely in French and has thus not had a home video release anywhere in the world with English subs.

The Pianist requires English subs for portions in German. It's entirely possible this could be a Polish or French UHD with local subs only.

I would say The Pianist is an important enough movie that it should transcend the director's notoriety and get an US or UK release, even if that means not including any extras that feature Polanski.

I agree, but we're talking about different things. You're suggesting what should happen, and on that, I could not agree more with you.

However, I'm suggesting that much as the film should be respected as a landmark in world cinema, I don't think that will realistically happen.

Again, I use the example of his last three films:

An Officer and a Spy - has never had a theatrical or home video release in any English-speaking market. Distributors who were caught by journalists attending a screening refused to even allow their names or company names to be printed in one article.

Based on a True Story - Bought by Sony Pictures Classics for the US, but never released here in any form - theatrical, home video, streaming. They buried the film and ate whatever cost they paid for the rights. That film similarly has never had a home video release in any English-speaking market.

Venus in Fur - Polanski's last film to get a US release, 8 years ago, and only a tiny distributor like IFC Films was willing to touch him, even then. That film only got a DVD release in the US.

I really do want to separate what we all would like to happen - a gorgeous new UHD with English subtitles, released in the UK and/or the US - from what is more likely to happen - a UHD without English subtitles released in France only.

This was in direct response to someone who was considering getting rid of their existing Blu-Ray, and I was suggesting they would be wiser to hold onto it for now, unless they're okay with a UHD with only French or Polish subtitles.

If Studiocanal releases this then i'm sure at least the UK will get a 4k release as well.
Since The Pianist has been released recently by Shout Factory i doubt the US will see a 4k release soon unless Shout will step in and release one.

Studiocanal does, at least, control The Pianist in both the UK and France, unlike Bridget Jones, where they only have France, thus the France-only UHD.
