Criterion Shampoo (1975)

Quote:
Shampoo gives us a day in the life of George, a Beverly Hills hairdresser and Lothario who runs around town on the eve of the 1968 presidential election trying to make heads or tails of his financial and romantic entanglements. His attempts to scrape together the money to open his own salon are continually sidetracked by the distractions presented by his lovers—played brilliantly by Goldie Hawn, Julie Christie, and Lee Grant (in an Oscar-winning performance). Star Warren Beatty dreamed up the project, cowrote the script with Robert Towne, and enlisted Hal Ashby as director, and the resulting carousel of doomed relationships is an essential seventies farce, a sharp look back at the sexual politics and self-absorption of the preceding decade.

About time! Now all we need is “The Landlord” and all of Ashby’s 70s output will be on Blu.

YAY!

Been waiting a long time for this- and they used the original key art (or at least something really close to it)!

Looks like they didn't use the original logo, but the main image is right and proper.

Extras do look weak considering how well regarded this film is from a decade full of classics.

Oh well. I'll take a 4K remaster done by Crisp and co. and be quite happy.

Which is kind of all you need... I'm a pretty hardcore completist and even I would be fine with DVD-only for "The Slugger's Wife" and "Secondhand Hearts". But "The Landlord" would be pretty close to a day one upgrade.

Anybody who's in NY, go see "The Landlord" at the Film Forum on 9/11.

It was at the time, but now other Ashby films have a much higher 'status', so to speak.

What a terrific announcement! I know this is a divisive film, but I think this is easily Ashby's best film. The special features do leave a lot to be desired though. I mean, one new interview and that's it? It's especially unfortunate considering how well regarded the film. This is a film that is begging for an audio commentary, but I guess that's what the new discussion is for. I would have loved a Molly Haskell feature with her take on the sexual politics of the film. Honestly, they should hire her more as she's always informative, insightful and generally delightful.
I guess I shouldn't be that surprised though as Beatty has stated that he doesn't like participating in extras. Hawn doesn't seem interested in talking about her career and has never done special features as far I know. Hal Ashby is dead, so that's out. Julie Christie has done some interviews about her films though, so it's disappointing they couldn't get her to sit down for an interview. I've noticed that she tends to skip discussions of films she's done with her Beatty, maybe its due to the fact that they dated? At the very least Lee Grant could have participated considering she won an Oscar for this. You're telling me that they couldn't even manage to interview someone from the crew? Oh well, I guess I should just be happy with the new restoration.

Haven’t been happier in awhile to remove a title from my most wanted signature below (it was sitting in the top 5.)

Pre-ordered this from the US. Was hoping Criterion would put this out in the UK too as they have been doing with a fair few titles recently. But no sign of it in the UK as a pre-order. Odd. Still, it's a must have for me as I've always really liked the film. Great cast, some blinding comedy sequences (especially at that election dinner) and some moments of bitter sweet melancholy. Fantastic soundtrack for the party sequence plus the addition of a cracking Beach Boys track playing over the opening and closing credits give this film a great aura. Saw it the first time back in about 1981 on tv. It's always stuck with me even though so many people seem to dislike or dismiss it now.

It's possible that Indicator has it in the UK, which is why Criterion's UK pages haven't mentioned this title nor said anything about it being a dual region release.

If Criterion releases it in the US, it'll either come from them or, a lesser chance, Sony themselves. I suspect that it'll be a November or December release in the UK.

You must have heard about it by now, but Criterion are bringing it out in the UK on Bonfire Night.

Yeah, I cancelled my US order and pre-ordered the UK release instead.
