I really like the HD-ILA technology over DLP. The Pioneer is a "rebadged" version of the JVC, but with some upgraded parts to it. I have seen both, but I don't think its worth the money on the upgrade.

The Pioneer Elite is a rebadged JVC HD100/RS2. The JVC HD750/RS20 is the 2nd generation JVC DILA projector. The 750/RS20 is better then the ELITE/HD100/RS2 in every way, it's quieter, sharper, deeper blacks, better colors, better long lasting lamp, better lens, Color management system, manual iris, THX color presets, smaller slimmer case, motorized lens cover.

I own the HD750/RS20 little brother the RS10 and couldn't be happier, the JVC's are the only projectors that can deliver all there on/off contrast without the use of a dynamic iris. The pop of the colors and deep blacks are incredible. I did have the Epson 6500UB pre-ordered but just before it's release I canceled the pre-order and switched it to the RS10. I did pay a lot more for the JVC over the 6500UB but I got more in return. If you can afford it get the RS20, if your a DILA fan you will be happy, it's a hell of a projector.

The Pioneer is a rebadged RS-2 -- Pioneer made no mods to it other than rebadging it. The DLA-HD750 or RS20 is an improvement over the RS-2. A bit brighter, an adjustable iris, better sequential contrast, quieter, added a CMS (color management system) to adjust gamut, and added a 12v trigger.

I owned an RS-2 briefly, and the image is excellent. I have not seen an RS20, but reports of owners are that it is an improvement on the RS-2, although there have been some build issues with early RS20's (something to do with the lens shift mechanism).

I have not seen the new Panasonic AE3000, but by all reports, it is an excellent projector. I would guess that the RS20 will still throw a better picture than the Panasonic given the much better native contrast ratio of the JVC, but I could be wrong. You'll have to ask someone who has seen them both. The JVC also has a sealed light path whereas the Panasonic does not.

If you are considering a new projector, I would skip the Pioneer and consider the RS20 versus the AE3000. Personally, if you can swing it, I would go for the RS20. I think it would be a step up from the Panasonic. Having seen the beautiful picture of the RS2, I'm a bit biased; but speaking with some installers who have seen both, I don't think there is a question that the RS20 is a better projector, as it should be given the price point.

The AE3000 is not a DLP BTW, it's LCD panel based. The JVC is 3 panel D-ILA (aka LCOS) based.

DLA-RS20 $4000
DLA-RS2 $3850

I'd say anything under these would be a fair price, around $3000 would be a great price.

RS10's can be had for just under 4 grand.

I don't think I would pay more then $3500 for an HD100/RS2, anymore then that and I would just buy an RS10. You will give up some contrast going from the HD100 to the HD350/RS10 but you will getting improvements in every other department going to the RS10. One downside to the 1st gen JVC's HD1/RS1, HD100/RS2 is they are not very bright projectors and there lamps dim very fast. The new 2nd gen's have a new lamp that is brighter then the previous and does not dim as fast.

Actually the RS20 isn't going for $4000, it's a reserved auction that starts at 4K, most dealer prices have been around $6300. Best price I have seen on the RS20 was $5800 from a private seller.

EDIT:
I take that back, $5650.00 from a private seller.

Good price, but be careful. If you buy a projector off there it will more then likely not have a warranty. Some HD350/RS10's and HD750/RS20's owners have received units with broken lens shifts out of the box and lamp warning errors. If you get stuck with one of those units from an unauthorized dealer you may be paying for a repair out of pocket.
