Default Universal vs. Disney

I don't know if anyone has put this together, and I am sorry if you have, but in the amusement park world Universal and Disney are mortal enemies. Could this have spilled over to this war as well? Uni saw Disney as an exclusive backer of Blu-Ray and said we can't be a part of that. If this is the case Uni will hold out until the very end when they have no other choice but to go Blu. The only reason I say that is because I have seen the same in Florida with their parks. When they first opened they did take a lot of market share from Disney and hurt them. But over time they did not keep up with their park while Disney kept making theirs better and have again come out on top. So if this is history repeating itself Blu-ray will win but won't be able to put HD DVD out of its writhing misery.

I could be completely wrong but it could bring up a unique conversation!

Interesting idea.
Only difference between that and this is Disney is not the only one backing Blu-ray while Universal IS the only one backing HD-DUD.
So if it was up to just Disney, they might make it out on top but not be bale to take them out. But with all the other support, I feel there is no other way for HD-DEAD to go but down!

Harks back to the days of the Mac G3 desktop... when you looked at the Apple logo and the G3 on the side of the box... and squinted a bit ... it looked like a stylized Mickey Mouse logo. It fueled tons of rumors back in the day about Disney buying Apple.

The divisions don't even talk, unless they're running a promotional event in the parks. ESPECIALLY with Universal.

Uni has publically stated that GE is pressuring them every day to go Blu. This says "As soon as our exclusive contract is up, we're going neutral" to me

Well hardly surprising since the parks are not a subsidiary of NBC UNiversal, or GE.

That's right, Vivendi kept them didn't they

In my experience, Universal Home Video US doesn't even know what Universal Australia is doing

No one knows for sure who isn't party to it

Rumor has it either in January, or when they released 100 discs(which they now have).

Either way, I expect them to go neutral at CES 2008, that way they can look like they stayed loyal to Toshiba as long as they possibly could, but that Toshiba just couldn't hold up their initial promise.

I have worked for both of these companies. And still have many friends there. I've also done Tours of Duty in both LA and Orlando.

I can assure you, the format wars have absolutely ZERO to do with theme park ventures. Home Video and Theme Park don't even speak to each other. Worlds apart.

Fun coffee talk. No element of truth.

If you really want to understand the format wars, you need to go back to the original Supreme Court case involving Sony and Universal over the Betamax. In today's war when you hear Sony, think Sony Alliance (Sony, Disney, etc...).

Universal tried to sue Sony over the Betamax technology and lost. If it were not for this key decision Home Theater would not exist today. Universal is fighting Sony (Disney, et al) over this 25 year old court decision. Altough in the end Universal has greatly enjoyed the benefits of losing this decision, they are still determined to somehow come out on top. This is why they are pushing so heavily for HD-DUD. They refuse to align themselves with anything related to Sony.

See Wikipedia article to understand the Sony v. Universal "Betamax" case:

Yeah, you could, and it's.....unique, all right:

Let's go back over the basics--
1) Blu is Sony's baby,
2) Universal is supporting HD because it's Microsoft's baby, and the fact that Disney is supporting Blu because of Apple is ironic but hasn't seemed to have affected the wars as much as one would think,
3) The park divisions are relatively independent of the home video divisions,

And...what else?...Oh, well, we'll probably find some more later in the thread.

I thought it was still rumored? I've never seen the actual proof that there is one, although I would like to.

Prob not one. The handshake is:

Universal: Toshiba, keep sending us those checks and discounts until we say so

Toshiba: OK.

Yepp, Universal is currently watching pie charts. As soon as they figure theyd make more by selling BR's instead of taking what Toshiba can afford theyll go neutral
