Amazon The Aeronauts (2019)

Source: Variety

Quote:
Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones Reunited in First Look at Amazon Studio’s ‘Aeronauts’
by Robert Mitchell - AUGUST 15, 2018 6:27AM PT

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are reunited in the first-look image for Amazon Studios’ “The Aeronauts,” which began shooting in the U.K. this week. Two-time Oscar nominee Tom Courtenay has joined the production as part of the newly announced supporting cast.

According to producers the first-look image was taken with the two lead actors 2,000 feet in the air. “We’re fortunate that Felicity and Eddie have the nerve to do these stunts themselves as it authenticates our entire approach,” said producer Todd Lieberman.

Lieberman says authenticity is a top priority for the production. “We intend to do as much balloon filming in the sky as the weather will allow. The image was taken after we launched Felicity and Eddie 2,000 feet in the air, performing their scripted scene, while a helicopter captured it all,” said Lieberman.

Set in 1862, “The Aeronauts” tells the story of a wealthy young widow and an ambitious scientist who mount a perilous hot-air balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. As their ascent reveals their true selves, the unlikely pair discover things about each other and themselves that help them find their place in the world they’ve left below.

The British stars previously worked together in James Marsh’s “The Theory of Everything,” for which Redmayne won the best actor Academy Award while Jones was nominated as best actress.

BAFTA and Golden Globe-winner Courtenay, who has twice been Oscar nominated as supporting actor for “Doctor Zhivago” and lead actor for “The Dresser,” has also joined the project. The newly revealed supporting cast also includes Anne Reid, Rebecca Front, Vincent Perez, Tim McInnerny, Phoebe Fox and Himesh Patel.

“The Aeronauts” is directed by Tom Harper, who recently handled the BBC’s 2016 television adaptation of “War and Peace,” and written by five-time BAFTA winner Jack Thorne. Harper and Thorne previously collaborated on “The Commuter” episode of anthology series “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” for Channel 4, Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

Harper produces alongside Lieberman and David Hoberman for Mandeville Films. Richard Hewitt serves as executive producer. FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales.

I like these two and I liked Theory of Everything, but this story just doesn't sound good. Hopefully a trailer changes my mind.

I hate Eddie Redmayne and it's bad enough I'm forced to see his face during the Fantastic Beasts series.

Amazon Studios is shifting anticipated Eddie Redmayne-Felicity Jones pic The Aeronauts deeper into awards season from October 25 to December 6.

Apparently it will now only get a small theatrical release before hitting Prime Video two weeks later and may well not play in IMAX at all (despite designing its big scenes around that format). Amazon can use that “heart of awards season” line, but this suggests to me at best Amazon is questioning the box office potential of a full theatrical run after a string of flops, or at worst is outright dumping the film with a bare minimum theatrical release to fulfill contractual obligations (no way a full theatrical run in October wouldn’t have more awards potential than a two week window in December, as we know how some Oscar voters feel about streaming releases).

And there goes the one thing that might've convinced me to see this in theaters. Oh well.

Given the premise, I supposed it would be either quite stuffy or insufferably whimsical, but the trailer makes it look anything but.

Looks pretty good, but I did think it looked a little too whimsical.

Redmayne and Jones team up for yet another biographical film. At least they know their niche. Odd that Tom Harper would direct such a stuffy film after Wild Rose.

I loved this, and I'm glad I saw it on the big screen. Doesn't overstay its welcome and I really liked the structure, interspersing the balloon ride part with how the two main characters got to that point. It was an easy and at times beautiful film to watch with likeable leads and just about managed to escape the slightly televisual/stagey feel I could see it might have slipped into (and others may feel does).

Nice little Star Wars reference early on too I thought, intentional or otherwise
[Show spoiler]"stardust"!

A solid 4 and half stars out of 5 for me.
