I personally never upgraded the DVD, so I'll probably get this despite my lukewarm feelings towards the artwork.

I'm definitely getting this because at the very least it should have lossless sound which the old Sony release did not. But if they're going to do a steelbook release why would they give it such terrible artwork? This movie had a lot of great posters its shame that no US company has taken advantage of it:

Depending on artwork I'm down. If it's what in the OP then I don't mind that, but it could definitely be better.

Will this actually be a steelbook or will it be like Akira where it was advertised as a steel but isn't one?

I'm not sure Funimation quite understands that there are different kinds of metal cases. They had a super-expensive set of the series for preorder a little while ago, and the description said, "six Blu-ray discs in three steel collector cases"--which could end up being just about any metal case.

Incidentally, that set also included the movie, so maybe there's a chance they'll release a set of steelbooks for the series, without all the fancy extra stuff and high price tag.

This is what I was wondering about. Is it just a repackage? Or will it have lossless audio like the Japanese release?

It’s supposed to be a newer master. Should be lossless audio. And this time it has extras.

And it might not be a steelbook but it’s similar to a steelbook edition. In my opinion, it’s worth getting.

Yes, this has Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mixes like the Japanese release.

Yeah, it's looking like it's a Viva Metal Box. Will update OP...

I like the red. Wish it were an actual Steelbook but I don't have any Viva Elites (I think), so I don't mind getting one. Price will be the deciding factor.

Good to know. Got the series, but haven’t picked up the movie yet. I’ll have to keep an eye out for this one.

The FUNimation release?

It's not optimal. De-grained then re-grained, and smeary in comparison to every other BD release internationally. Plus, it's not 1080i, which is incorrect, as some of the 30fps CGI was forced into the 24fps progressive image.

Italian release by Dynit is the best in terms of PQ/AQ (no English subs nor dub). Though, Anime Limited in the UK is doing a huge collector's edition later this year, and may have remastered video- maybe, hasn't been confirmed.

I'm seriously looking at getting the AL set as I've only got an SE of the series and the movie so, time to go premium on such an iconic anime.
As for this metal/steel/future whatever pack, it's not a bad alternative for just the movie. Considering they could've gone PopArt or Mondo, perhaps we should count our blessings...

What are the odds this will hit the $20 mark or so? Like Akira did. I don’t keep up with FUNimation titles and only have a few.
