I hope so, but the chances are that these discs are being mastered/compressed/authored as we speak. I just hope that SC suddenly find themselves in the position to do better work thanks to having this new format, just as Lionsgate have proved surprisingly adept in the UHD arena while their Blu-rays are still shite.

Throw bitrate at the problem.
Deer is out soon so we will find out what they are made of.

David M has consistently proved that bitrate alone doesn't do it, you've gotta have people knowing what they're doing with those bits, and for whatever reasons the progression to UHD has allowed Lionsgate to do that.

I know how to do it right, I am saying SC without him might as well do that to try and mitigate another Highlander, just do a 70gb plus encode and just no matter the length just go nuts.
Lions gate have their own rule book with their filmouts and dolby everything and they are bit heavy with the DNR at times.

The Fog 4K quickly became the top of my most wanted list.
Cant wait!

I think this is being released regularly in North America too now correct?

No, not yet. Studio Canal owns distribution outside the U.S. so this is probably going to be a wide European release.

Someone in North America would have to license it -- and Shout's doing a Blu-Ray mastered from a 4K transfer, but not a UHD, this fall. Maybe someday but not anytime soon.

Are we confident of a UK release? Add They Live, PoD and Christine to my curiosity too!

Caps is pure sex. Now they need to encode the scan well. If EFNY looks as good... I'm touching myself tonight.

You might well know, but as you're not doing these encodes for SC (and nor is David AFAIK) then we're back to a wing and a prayer.

[edit] Just throwing bits at it with lazy virtual CBR-type encodes will get you so far with SDR material, the likes of Shout and Criterion have been bodging that for years and getting away with it, but HDR needs proper attentiveness to mitigate its unique compression challenges (e.g. less bit depth is afforded to the highlights than in SDR) and you can't just throw bitrate at it, press a button and have it come out perfect - or even merely okay - the other side. One too many recent discs present with that blatant chroma noise because the encoders are starving the chroma channels of data, either deliberately or through sheer incompetence, but it's telling that Lionsgate are not one of the offenders.

Did you mean The Thing? As I haven't seen them announce a Fog 4K Blu-ray from Scream for release later.

Those caps look gorgeous. If the encode is as good as well as sales than I hope we can see stuff like Wings of Desire, The Dam Busters, and Mulholland Drive on 4K.

Seriously, between Christine and this coming out soon on UHD with the promise of more Carpenter waiting in the wings, what did we do right?

so wait, I'm confused, if Rialto is theatrically releasing this in the States on Oct. 26th, who'd that mean could or would release a 4K UHD edition - Universal? cause I'm kind of sick of Scream/Shout doing all these 4K remastering and not putting them out as 'limited' edition UHD disc.

MGM owns the home video rights to "The Fog" in the US. Honestly your best bet is to import the Canal release because I don't see Lionsgate releasing them in the States.
