There are differing views on it. I thought it looked OK, but I think there have been complaints that too much DNR was used to remove grain. That doesn't necessarily worry me as much as it seems to worry some people. To my eyes, the image still has plenty of detail in it. So you should probably base your decision on how important you think the grain issue is.

If the complaints were also based on factors such as edge enhancement (I can't remember all the details of the complaints), then it would probably depend on your screen size as to whether that would be really noticeable. I'm watching on a 46" screen and, as I say, I didn't have any major issues with it. Great movie as well!

i own it and honestly, unless i'm blind i dont see the problem. In fact i think its a good looking bluray, much better than some of my other titles like Stagate or Universal Soldier.... just get it, awesome flick and it looks good to me and i'm watching it on my 100" screen

I bought Gangs of NY, and the PQ is definately nothing to brag about. I thought the AQ was average, but definately not worth a double-dip imo.

There are issues with EE, DNR, and contrast boosting. It is transfered from the same master as the dvd which was once called "the worst dvd transfer ever."

Detail is better than the dvd, so if, as you say, you are a fan of the film, then don't hesitate to pick it up. Disney will have to create an entirely new digital master before a disc with better pq can be available.

Well I have seen screen captures comparing the DVD to the Blu-ray and I honestly could barely tell the difference. Judging from those screenshot comparisons alone I would say if you have the DVD already an upgrade to Blu-ray should be very questionable.

I ordered it for about 16 bucks from an Amazon seller. It hasn't arrived yet, but I hope I'll like the picture since it's one of my favorite films.

i was wanting to pick this up at some point as well, but have been reading all the negative reviews. i dont own it on DVD, but what are the chances that they will redo the blu ray and re release a better transfer at some point? any ideas?

Studios always love to re release titles to make you buy certain things more than once, but if they do re release it then it will probably be re released to give new special features, but will almost undoubtedly use the same transfer.

It honestly looked like a bad DVD-rip to me and I'm not overexaggerating either. Though the sound quality on it was really good.

Default SCORECESE Commentary - Reason enough there!

Well, that and the movie is pretty good I thought. You have a good performance from Leo and the usual over-the-top Daniel Day Lewis, good story, set designs, etc. - I would think the PQ & AQ is better than the SD version, plus as noted above, it has the "Rare" Martin Scorcese Commentary (yes, the SD does as well), so if the price is right, i'd def. go for it. I will be soon myself. I think all the comments here about the PQ may be because of the way it was filmed to look closer to the era it portrays. Just a thought...

I did the same thing, looked for it in the AMazon marketplace for aroun $13... the picture quality is not that bad but it is not definitely reference material. It does look at times as if it were the standard DVD upscaled... on the bright side, we finally have the movie in a single disc... man it was annoying to change discs in the middle of the movie!
