Default Sound BlasterX Katana - how does surround work?

To get simulated 5.1, must the film have 5.1 sound? Or can you get simulated 5.1 sound out of a Stereo track?
I would just like to get this confirmed.

thanks

Yes, it'll be able to fake it out of any source with stereo separation, that's how Dolby Surround from 2.0 channels works. In fact, fake is the key word.

Depending how it does it, true 5.1 input might sound better. This is certainly true of any virtual bars of 3.1 and above, though I read this is only 2.1 so I guess any difference will be down to processing alone.

EDIT: If it extracts the LFE (.1) channel from 5.1 inputs and sends that to the subwoofer then it's just occurred to me it'll give more accurate bass effects with a true 5.1 source over 2.0.
