Default TV viewing on HDTV

Hello, I'm new to the forum here and have a question about the my first HDTV. I live in a college dorm so I bought a 22" Samsung 720p HDTV due to space and cost reasons. I have it all hooked up but when watching channels that my college provides (through an RCA HD optimized coaxial cable) the picture seems to have a slightly grainy (or noise) look to them.

Is there any way I can fix this or it is because the source is standard definition? I'll post additional information if necessary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

it's probably interference caused by the cable that is being split/spliced so many times since the same signal is being sent to all of the dorm rooms.

That's just my guess at least.....

What is an "HD Optimized" RCA cable anyways

Nothing you can really do. Crap in= crap out. Can you use an indoor antenna? You might be able to get ota hd.

I'll try to find a URL of the cable I am using for more information.

I'm afraid an antenna might reduce the number of channels I get. See, with my previous tv I only got about 10 channels while my roommate with the same setup got all the channels. But now with the HDTV I get all the channels so I rather not lose them.

As a bit of a stop loss you can reduce the sharpness on the set and play around with any digital noise reduction(DNR) filters. Keep in mind that if you are using any other source, i.e. blu-ray, I would suggest turning those DNR filters off.
