Apologies if this thread already exists but I couldn’t see one. If there is one, kill this thread...and me.
![]() If anyone wants to tidy up and/or take over this thread I’m sure 13thman can do some Mod Magic (I’m more of a reader than a poster in this forum). Here is a list of 3D Blu Rays where an object-based soundtrack is available in another format (UHD or Regular Blu Ray). This may be a useful list for those who like to (legally) backup their discs and remux the soundtracks. I've linked those movies to the reviews where the Object-based soundtrack describes discrete use of the height channels or significantly improves upon the soundtrack available on the 3D Blu Ray and I've highlighted those movies which were deemed by the critics to be 'Must See' or had a >4/5 review for Audio & 3D on this site. For the record, I generally used the UK release as my starting point for searching. Sources: 1 2 3 What movies have I missed? Blu Rays [Show spoiler] UHD [Show spoiler] 3D Blu Rays where an Object-based Soundtrack is present [Show spoiler] Wishlist (where an Object-based soundtrack was mixed for the theatrical release but is not available in any home format) [Show spoiler]

There are plenty of other ones, Transformers 4 and 5, Everest, Batman v Superman, the new Ninja Turtles films, Pacific Rim Uprising, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (which comes out this week). And there are others, but just ones I know off the top of my head.

Fortunately, the vast majority of movies in this category don’t benefit very much from the objects based mix. In fact, many times the bass response in the non-Atmos mix is superior. Add-in the fact that objects based receivers can upmix to approximate a native objects based mix, and I don’t think you’re missing much.
In fact there are only a handful where the objects based mixes are vastly superior (i.e. BR2049, Gravity, & RPO). And for those rare cases....they invented muxing! ![]() |

What does "object-based" mean? |

Essentially DTS:X, Dolby Atmos or Auro.
The difference is that when a movie is mixed nowadays individual elements (objects) of sounds can be ‘placed’ in the theatre and the software translates that to what sounds need to come from which channel. It also means that the engineer only has to create one mix rather than a mix for 2.0, 5.1, 7.1 etc. In addition, object-based soundtracks have height channels (speakers above the viewer). |

King Arthur is also only 5.1 on the 3D disc, though the Warner Home Video opening on it is in Atmos. The 2D disc is in Atmos.

I stand corrected on both of these.

All of the above! It depends what you have to play them back on. Burning to Blu Ray obviously carries an additional cost but playing from USB or network share will depend on you having the right hardware (player, decent/wired network).

I know it's not highlighted green, but I thought The Great Wall had good effects in both 3D and Atmos that it would be among the top of my list if you're watching a movie for both.

Fair enough! Thanks for highlighting that movie.
The Atmos soundtrack sounds like it really makes use of the height channels. I’ve not highlighted green as there is no 3D review of that movie on this site. It’s all subjective, just trying to have a consistent rule. |

Personally, for me, I am less interested in what Atmos/DTS:X/overhead channels do for panning. Where I feel the overheads really pay off is when the Score is mixed to use the overheads (splitting the instruments in the same way that an aggressive stereo mix does). I noticed it quite a bit when I watched The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. |
