Default ABC's New Marvel Series Female Superheroes

New Marvel show at ABC:

Quote:
Marvel Series About Female Superheroes From ‘Wonder Woman’s Allan Heinberg Set At ABC With Big Commitment

EXCLUSIVE: Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg is aiming to bring more female superheroes to the screen, this time in television.

ABC has given a production commitment to an untitled hourlong drama from Heinberg, Marvel Television and ABC Studios. Written by Heiinberg, it is about female characters with superpowers.

In typical Marvel fashion, further details are being kept close to the vest, but I hear the drama is based on lesser-known Marvel characters. There have been a number of fairly obscure female superhero team-ups that have appeared sporadically in Marvel comics over the years, including A-Force, Lady Liberators and Fearless Defenders.

Heinberg, who is under an overall deal at ABC Studios, is executive producing the potential series with Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.

Launching a new Marvel series has been a priority for ABC, with the Heinberg project emerging as a strong contender from the get-go, I hear.

“In terms of Marvel, we have some things that we are in discussions with them right now that we are in development,” the network’s entertainment president Channing Dungey told Deadline last month. “I’m very excited about it.”

Being a female-centric, the new series would fit nicely into ABC’s lineup that has strong appeal to women with such drama series as Shondaland’s Grey’s Anatomy, How To Get Away With Murder and the recently-departed Scandal, as well as hot newcomer The Good Doctor.

ABC previously developed Jessica Jones before the female superhero project migrated to Netflix as part of the big Marvel TV package.

Marvel Television’s live-action series ramp-up following Disney’s 2009 acquisition of Marvel started with ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which launched in fall 2013. The series, an offshoot of The Avengers movie franchise, is heading into its sixth season, which will air next summer on the broadcast network.

Dungey said in May that the network is not planning the upcoming sixth season of S.H.I.E.L.D. as its last, and praised the most recent Season 5 as “creatively the strongest yet.”

In the past five years, ABC launched two other Marvel series which had short runs: Agent Carter, which was well received, and Inhumans.

While he is probably best known for writing the blockbuster DC movie Wonder Woman, Heinberg has a strong TV series and Marvel pedigree.

He worked on Shondaland series at ABC and ABC Studios for more than a decade. Heinberg first joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2006, segueing to Scandal before segueing to become co-creator/showrunner of The Catch, which aired for two seasons. Heinberg’s previous TV writing and producing credits include The Naked Truth, Party of Five, Sex and the City, Gilmore Girls, The O.C. and Looking.

For Marvel Comics, Heinberg created and wrote Young Avengers and its sequel, Avengers: The Children’s Crusade with co-creator/artist Jim Cheung.

Additionally, for DC Comics, he co-wrote JLA: Crisis Of Conscience with Geoff Johns (art by Chris Batista), and re-launched Wonder Woman in 2006 with artists Terry and Rachel Dodson. Heinberg is repped by UTA and attorney Ken Richman.

A number of female Marvel characters have been adapted in recent years for TV — including Jessica Jones, Agent Carter, Medusa on Inhumans — and film (Fox’s X-Men franchise includes Storm, Mystique and Rogue, played by Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence and Anna Paquin, respectively).

Cool. Once again, I bet you they'll reference the MCU, but the latter won't acknowledge them.

If only it would be like the good old days of Agents of SHIELD where it connects to MCU not just acknowledging it. Well it least this will not be on Disney streaming service that is a PLUS.

I don't really see how the movie could reference the shows, they have such different schedules. Movies are written years in advance and sometimes filmed up to a year in advance, the shows could have filmed an episode with an altered script 2 weeks before it airs. MAYBE the helicarriers from Ultron but I feel like they just threw in that on AoS to fill in a plothole lol Plus, to be fair, AoS was pretty much just reacting to events of the movies, still basically just acknowledging the events.

I'm all for the show, but let's not act like they didn't already have a female show that got kicked to the curb, she just wasn't a SUPERhero...and was probably a better show anyway. I am surprised it'll be on ABC since it seems like ABC hates having to have Marvel on their network as it is.

At the rate Marvel shows getting canceled wondering what they are planning especially since they own Fox Marvel now. Hopefully Netflix MCU gets a reboot but not PG-13.

Probably something to do with the upcoming Disney streaming service.

I don't think anything could be worse than Inhumans well for now but let's not forget Iron Fist season one even though not on ABC but the creator of Iron Fist season one was also the creator of Inhumans and you would think Disney would have learned from this. Inhumans was really planned as a movie for the longest time kind Disney's X-Men which the script just sat at the studios collecting dust than Agents of SHIELD brought Inhumans story so things changed especially when Agents of SHIELD became less connected to the Marvel Movie Universe.

Well one good news I read unrelated to Marvel but related to Disney getting Fox R-Rated or TV-MA movies they said Deadpool will still be R-rated under Fox studios name same with possible Alien and Predator reboot. So if true a possible Netflix MCU series could still get a reboot without getting watered down.

I'm probably mistaken, but, I thought Disney owned ABC? anyway, I think, if they put money in the budget for effects and let Medusa keep her hair, put the characters in their comicbook outfits and didn't "humanize" them, I think it would have been good.

I believe you're right about ABC being owned by Disney. But at the same time, didn't Disney literally force ABC to not cancel Agents of Shield a year or two back?

Yes, ABC is owned by Disney and it is widely believed Disney forced ABC to give AoS a season five (I do watch the show but season 4 was poorly rated). Right now ABC is in the middle of a regime change (President Channing Dungey is stepping down if she hasn't already.
As for this show not moving forward, I'm starting to think Disney is seriously banking on the Disney Plus service and the Marvel shows going to it (we already know about Loki and Scarlet Witch/Vision shows). Not to mention we've lost most of their Netflix shows, Legion is ending this year, The Gifted is likely getting canceled.
That's the only thing I can think of as to why this isn't moving forward.

The Gifted getting cancelled is no shocker for me even though I love the cast and they are fitting to the way they look in the Comic Books. One reason The Gifted will end sadly is because Disney got the rights to X-Men and I am sure after X-Men: Phoenix and New Mutants get a theater release X-Men will get rebooted. As for Deadpool Disney said it will stay R-rated but under Fox name.

But as for Netflix/Disney/MCU sucks that they got canned Daredevil is probably the best one out of all the rest. Iron Fist season 2 was a nice improvement the fight scenes were so much better, The Punisher season 2 was just terrible so much was wasted and having Billy not getting the whole Jigsaw transformation was just too painful to watch. As for Luke Cage enjoyed second season sad that we will never see Tilda become as Nightshade but it least we saw how she would have looked. And as for Jessica Jones I like this one because it is just different from the rest but what really helped was having David Tennant as Killgrave aka Purple Man such a great actor.

Not sure why would Disney would want all MCU to be on Disney+ when a lot of MCU are also meant to be as R-rated or TV-MA which Hulu would be a great idea for this but MCU series and movies going only to streaming would be a terrible movie it least DCU is not doing that with their CW shows.

Marvel getting the rights back to X-Men is why I always thought both Legion and Gifted would end sooner than later. Gifted just now has a reason given its low ratings. Legion I think is using "3 seasons was always the plan" as an excuse to cover its plans for cancelation. With Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, there's been rumblings that New Mutants might not even get a theatrical release and just end up on Hulu. As for Deadpool not sure if the rumors are true but the rumor I read was it'll remain R rated, Ryan Reynolds will remain in the role, but it will remain SEPARATE from MCU.

As for the Netflix shows, Daredevil is easily the BEST show Marvel has EVER made! Some people say Netflix is to blame while others say it's Disney to blame. While Iron Fist and Defenders did nothing for me, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Punisher were great (and Jon Bernthal easily the best on screen punisher to date).

As for Disney putting most (AoS is renewed through season 7 and we still have Runaways and Cloak & Dagger), of their shows on Disney Plus I do think it's a bad idea. As you mentioned WB isn't doing that with DC shows and the content of thier shows is more varied (Preacher and Krypton being on cable and rightfully so, CW shows being more of a wide audience, Watchmen being on HBO) I don't see this being the case with the MCU shows on Disney Plus given Disney said most of the stuff will be all ages. I think this could hurt them in the long run. I do hope they eventually make some more mature Marvel shows either for Hulu or cable (they are about to own FX).
