Of course my favorite part of Robin Hood: Prince of Thives is anytime Alan Rickman is on screen. He is so over the top, it's like he's in a whole other movie.

1973, Papillon. I was a young teenager. I left the theater physically exhausted and emotionally spent. For the first time in my life, I understood why women cried "happy" tears.

Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. Epic.

Outside of me, you mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Which is old. But I was hoping others would have older choices as well. Maybe even black-and-white movies. But that's probably too optimistic, I suppose.

What about 2001, did you tell the story? Of how you saw it?

I had The Godfather. I think I rented it when I was in high school (early 80's)and was going through a "watching all the classics" phase. It convinced me there were "great" movies. I still watched all the John Hughes movies though.

On a somewhat similar note, "Amadeus" made me fall in love with classical music. My "children of the 60's" parents couldn't understand that one.

Default C-i-n-e-r-a-m-a !

For me, the seeds of filmic love were planted in the sixties when as a child, my mother took my brother & I to the screenings of 'Custer of the West', and 'Khartoumn'; both 'CINERAMA' presentations, which offered an unsurpassed movie experience -- even to this day! Watching the huge image projected onto a massive, deeply-curved 2.76 AR screen was so absorbing an experience that the impressions remains undiminished 40 years later. Although both the aforementioned titles were not true 3-panel films, the presentation was approximate enough to overwhelm this viewer, and I consider myself fortunate enough to have experienced that brief, but glorious slice of cinematic history. BTW - yes, I am old!

Any films from that period? That left their marks as well?

Otherwise, cool... I wouldn't have thought of Cinerama. But it left it's mark. Very true.

Although not a 'Cinerama' feature, plus never having seen it theatrically, the standalone film from that era of epic moviemaking would undisputedly have to be 'Lawrence of Arabia'. Having owned the Criterion LD and Limited Edition 2-disc dvd, I wait with baited breath for the definitive BD, which will finally arrive this year sometime. As an aside, I think the only contemporary film that has attained the epic stature of 'LOA' in the last dozen or so years has argueably been 'Titanic', which is glaringly overdue for a BD treatment (yes, I know -- this site is populated with 'Titanic' haters..)

Anything can be art. As a kid I didn't really get that concept and just enjoyed things on an entertainment level.

Maybe you had a parent or other adult who showed you those kind of movies or shows. I just watched what was popular.

for me, it was "close encounters of the third kind" and indiana jones in my younger years...

in my later teen years, it was Star Wars. Still obsessed though.
______

my mom buys movies for a company that rents them, and she would always bring home movies she'd get for free. back in the day, she brought home star wars, episode 4. the original vhs release. (though it wasn't until 3 years or so later that i was able to actually watch it and comprehend it). i watched that movie so many times with my sister that we wore out the vhs. (i still have it actually as a collector item for myself.) i've since ordered multiple copies of the same exact vhs version of it online, just for the nostalgia of it. (these copies work very well even).

I have to admit i was into cartoons as a kid. My first experience with movies was the omen. i didn't really watch it because i was 6 and my older cousins wouldn't let sit in and watch it. Anyway but i went on to love movies like Rambo and missing action. Rocky 1-3 made me fall in love with movies. The movie indian in cupboard was i guess the first movie i cried to and fell in love with dramatic themes like losing someone u care about. Terminator 2 had me criyng at the end too. And i was just 9 years old!!!!! I love movies man.
