Are shadows just a formless black blob or is there a clear shape and distinction to them? Are there gradations of black or is it all just one big mess? An example is lighting on faces oftentimes casts part of the face in shadow. Are there still details there or is it all crushed into the blackness?
The difference in good vs. bad delineation is the answers to those questions. Some movies, either through detail, lighting, intentions of the director, equipment used, quality of the transfer, etc have lots of detail, and some do not. |

Shadow delineation is how well the image reproduces natural looking shadow information. Do shadows in real life obscure all detail completely? Usually not, so fine and small details should not be hidden in most shadows that are well delineated. This concept is related to the term "black crush".
