I'll give him one more movie to get the crap out of his system...if its a blow-fest like The Happening, he's a washout, IMO...

Why does no one seem to like Unbreakable?

...come on, you can't go wrong with Bruce Willis and Sammy J.

He would do well to direct an adaptation of someone else's work. The writing is where the problem lies.

I liked The Sixth Sense.. I thought it was the perfect horror/thriller type movie. Signs is the only alien movie, other than Fire In The Sky, that scared me (and I saw FITS when I was a kid, saw Signs at 16-17). Never seen Unbreakable, but it looks good. I can never make it through Lady in the Water and we all know about The Happening.

I enjoyed The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs, but everything else he has done since has been meh. The Happening is probably his worst film by far.
I also enjoyed the Sci-fi documentary about him prior to the release of the village. It was creepy as hell. Sci-fi initially said that the doc. was true, but came out 2 days later to say that it was a marketing ploy. I hope he gets back on track because when his movies are good, they can be great.

I really liked, Unbreakable. Creative and interesting story. It was good throughout and didn't need the 'surprise ending' to somehow validate the prior parts of the movie as being good ie; Sixth Sense and The Village. I liked Sixth Sense a lot, but it was pretty much my first Shamalan movie. By the time I watched, The Village, I was expecting something, um, unexpected. However, I liked the idea of the story. I haven't seen Lady in the Water (although looked interesting to me) nor The Happening..

So in respect to answering the OP's question, yes, I think he has gone down- hill. Although I don't think they are awful, I expect more and I think people expect his movies to be bad now, so he either needs to change his style/approach (or redirect his unexpected endings to viewers- have us expect a perceived 'bad' movie and surprise us otherwise?).

I like Unbreakable a lot and of course The Sixth Sense. I also like Signs.

I think he should stop focusing on the "surprise ending/unexpected twist" artifact that has come to identify him. You can only get away with that so many times.

I would love to see something different from him. If he sucks at that then I would confirm him as way down the hill and also as a one-trick pony.

Funny how the OP kind of answered his own question when he titled this thread.

and to think he began with the sixth sense........wow

i still say give the man a chance. i respect anyone who continually TRIES to bring unique and fresh ideas to a hollywood riddled with sequels, reboots, remakes, etc. props to you mnight: i applaud you for trying, even when you know you might not always succeed

I've enjoyed all his movies so far, and that includes "Wide Awake" and "Stuart Little". I think there are too many people here that hate movies for no good reason other than they read someone else doesn't like it.

He is definately a hit or miss director. Either he creates a masterpiece or complete crap.

The Happening is so bad it made me laugh.

Wahlberg is absolutely terrible.
