You are correct there. The 1994 version is pure perfection in my eyes.
I really don't see this new one being on that level or why it needs another adaptation, per se.

Nothing NEEDS to be made. OK, maybe something like Shoah. But otherwise, if we waited for people to make stuff that was somehow necessary then we would have pretty much no movies.

And I explained earlier why it has so many adaptations: It's very popular. On top of that, it doesn't cost a fortune to make. It's not like something like Lord of the Rings or whatever. It's also fairly straight-forward, really. It's not like making a new version of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I said it before, but I love the cast and I have great faith in Greta.

Are we even sure this is going to be a "faithful" adaptation? I mean, maybe it'll be more contemporary, set in Sacramento or something. Some guy on another forum ventured it could be set during the Vietnam war. I think we need to take these possibilities into account before saying this version is completely superfluous.

I have no more info than you do, or anyone else. But they already did an updated version. And although I can certainly see Gerwig doing something like that, it seems to me that it's more likely going to be an adaptation that sticks to the source material.

Heck, it might have been one of her favorite books growing up?

Again, this is all speculation based on absolutely zero evidence, I admit. But it's just a feeling. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

The pic will reunite Odenkirk and Streep, both of whom starred in the Oscar-nominated feature, The Post. Odenkirk’s recent credits include Girlfriend’s Day for Netflix, which he also wrote, The Disaster Artist, and Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2.

The film is based on the classic story by Louisa May Alcott. Amy Pascal is producing the project, along with Denise Di Novi and Robin Swicord, while Andrea Giannetti will oversee the production via Sony’s label Columbia Pictures.

Odenkirk can currently be seen in Season 4 of AMC’s acclaimed drama, Better Call Saul. He is also teaming up with John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad and director Ilya Naishuller to develop, produce and star in the action thriller Nobody, and is currently in development on the FX miniseries Night of the Gun, based on the memoirs of late New York Times columnist David Carr.

Odenkirk is repped by WME, Odenkirk-Provissiero, & Ziffren Brittenham LLC.

Yes, it is faithful and not only is it set in the period but also being shot in Concord Massachusetts. So, this should be the definitive version of the story on film. Shooting starts next week.

Definitive? The 1994 version was the definitive film version. I don't see this even sniffing the level of that one IMO.

Well, everybody is, of course, welcome to their own opinion but perhaps you should give this version a chance and see it before dismissing it.

I'm not dismissing it and never did. I just felt like the bar has been raised sky high at this point but Gerwig & company are more than welcome to give it a shot.

My feeling is that the effort they are putting into this one and with the talent involved it should be a great picture.
