Default Are Blu-ray remasters future proof?

Are studios making these in 2k or 4k, so they don't have to do it again, or are they just going for 1080 now?

I should think that depends on the title. Blade Runner or Baraka were done to a higher standard than most hi-def releases.

But the main point ought to be this: There's no home video format better than Blu-ray on the horizon (apart from 3D), and those Blu-rays based on good transfers and encodes ought to be as future-proof as anything for home viewing.

Digital archiving for studio purposes is a different thing, of course, but you should talk to Robert Harris about that.

I think most studios currently archive at 2K. I know Sony is going 4K now though.

I was thinking for 15-20 years from now. So when we get LOTR EE's on GD (gamma ray disc) they can be done in 4xxx X 2xxx resolution, with lossless 11.2 dts... without having to wait on another remastering.

Just one of my "got home from my night shift, felt like posting" ponderings!

I'm sorry people but I don't know what 2k and 4k stand for. I know it's 2000 and 4000 something, but what does it specifically refer to? Cheers.

i assume it's viewable resolution? with standard def being 420 and hi-def being 1080. debating whether in the future will they have higher-def and highest-def resolution?

lol 1080p resolution is not equal to the clarity/detail of film.

Isn't that what they said about DVD? Personally I would love to see a future format that is 4K uncompressed video and lossless sound, or something even better!

whats the point.. 4k on a massive screen compared to 1080 on a small screen looks the same. its blown on on the big screen so it looks like at home even tho what you are getting is half the size.

what we have now is good enough. dont get greedy.

I can tell who's gonna be the Blu Ray fan boys when the next format comes. And on a screen like mine and a lot of other peoples on this site it will make a diffrence. But that day won't come for awhile so I wouldn't worry about it.

but wait.. if we can get 200GB and up (16 layers!!!??!) in the future, if they wanna do 4k they could and it woudent mean a new format.. just double dipping.

Seriously how can they go beyond 1080p in the home for at least 10 or 15 years when you factor in the cost of a new format and every consumer has to buy a new TV to adopt Blu-Ray.

Plus after switching to Blu-Ray will they be willing to jump again.

Can you even see beyond 1080p unless you have a TV that's 60 inches minimum. You would have to sit 1 feet away to even see the tiniest bit of difference.

Lot's of hurdles need lot's of time. Even then they might not be jumped.

16 times sharper then HD. WTF are they trying to burn our eyes out. 16 times can't even imagine how that will look to the naked eye. I almost would say this will make damage to your eyes. 16 times HD that is insane it must be like looking at a laserbeam. and boom there goes your eyes he he
